Description
Meiko Morita is the protagonist of her story, a diligent and responsible second-year high school student who moves from the countryside of Akita Prefecture to Tokyo. Her decision to transfer to the prestigious Amamiya Girls Academy is driven by a strong sense of familial duty, as she hopes to ease the financial burden on her parents as the eldest of five siblings. She takes up a live-in working position at a school-affiliated manga café and dormitory called Hedgehog, expecting a typical student service program.
Upon her arrival, she discovers that her new living situation is far from ordinary. The dormitory is actually a manga café, and she is expected to both live and work in a cramped one-tatami mat space alongside a group of eccentric residents. The circumstances of her enrollment are rooted in a significant misunderstanding; Rie Amamiya, the wealthy and otaku daughter of the academy’s chairman who runs the café, has confused her with a popular newcomer manga artist who shares the same name. Unaware of this mix-up at first, Meiko begins her new life in the big city, taking on the role of a live-in staff member.
Personality-wise, Meiko is characterized by her wholesome and earnest nature. She is a dependable presence, often serving as the straight woman to the bizarre habits and strong-willed personalities of her dormitory companions. Despite her grounded and practical demeanor, she has a tendency to drift into intense bouts of wild fantasy. Furthermore, when her emotions run high or she is caught off guard, her native Akita dialect tends to slip out. She also displays a notable lack of skill with modern technology, which contrasts with the tech-savvy hobbies of those around her.
Throughout the story, Meiko’s role is that of the anchor for the group. Her personal arc involves navigating the chaos of working in a manga café and the cramped living conditions while grappling with the secret that her acceptance was based on mistaken identity, a fact which eventually comes to light. Despite her initial insecurity about lacking distinctive traits, she demonstrates a sharp, practical intelligence. Her accounting skills, for instance, prove instrumental in saving Hedgehog from bankruptcy, leading the café's owner to acknowledge her contributions in keeping the business afloat.
Her key relationships are forged with the other residents of Hedgehog. She shares a close bond with Rie Amamiya, whose initial misconception about her identity drives much of the early conflict and comedy. She also lives alongside Marika Suzuki, a lazy video streamer, and Neo Nakano, a diminutive but highly competitive aspiring professional gamer. In this group, Meiko often acts as a caretaker, looking after her friends when they fall ill or become overwhelmed, such as when she collapses from sleep deprivation or helps another resident prepare for a tournament.
Meiko possesses a few notable abilities beyond her academic and domestic skills. She is described as being skilled at cooking, a trait befitting her role as the eldest sister. More uniquely, she has a talent for accounting and financial management, which proves to be a critical asset for the manga café. While not a professional fighter, she also demonstrates a hidden competitive side, holding her own in fighting games against her more experienced gaming enthusiast friends, much to their surprise.
