Description
Kamon, also known by the alias Kuchinawa during the Taisho era, is a complex figure whose life spans from the Heian period into the 1920s. Originally one of the five disciples of the five-color party, he trained in onmyodo alongside the series' protagonist, Mao. As a result of a curse placed by the same party, his physical growth was halted at the age of twenty-two, leaving him an ageless onmyoji with a youthful appearance despite being over nine hundred years old.

On the surface, Kamon presents himself as a refined and impeccably dressed gentleman. He is often seen in a signature turquoise three-piece suit and fedora, projecting an air of a wealthy dandy from a bygone era. He is well aware of his handsome looks and uses them to his advantage, often flirting with women and moving comfortably through the upper echelons of society. This charming exterior, however, masks a deeply pragmatic and ruthless nature. While he can be courteous and restrained in daily life, he does not hesitate to kill when it serves his purposes, dispatching enemies with cold efficiency. He has done morally questionable work for centuries, including disposing of bodies for a serial killer, demonstrating a willingness to cross ethical lines to survive and achieve his goals.

Kamon's primary motivation is a deeply personal and romantic one that has driven him for nine hundred years: his love for a woman named Masago. A fellow disciple from the Heian period, Masago died long ago, but her corpse was preserved and kept by the onmyoji Shiranui, who uses her lingering powers for his own ends. Kamon is determined to retrieve her remains from Shiranui, and this singular obsession fuels many of his actions. He holds a grudge against Shiranui, believing he was also the target of a failed assassination attempt by the onmyoji at sea. His relationship with Mao is a central part of his story. Once senior and junior disciples, they were pitted against each other when Kamon was misled into believing Mao had betrayed their master. After reuniting in the Taisho era, their relationship becomes a fluid alliance of convenience, shifting between cooperation and rivalry as they face common enemies like Shiranui.

In terms of abilities, Kamon is an exceptionally powerful onmyoji specializing in wood-element techniques. He has masterful control over plants and trees, capable of using vines and roots to attack enemies, restrain them, or even destroy buildings. His power is such that he is considered one of the strongest among his former disciples, easily destroying powerful shikigami. Beyond brute force, his abilities are versatile and often subtle. He can cultivate herbs to heal wounds or create potent herbicides to counter parasitic plants. One of his most distinctive skills is information gathering and manipulation. He uses small, magical flowers to hypnotize and influence wealthy or influential individuals, making them believe he is an old friend or granting him access to their resources and privileges. He has relied on this ability to live comfortably for centuries. He is also a capable user of sacred seals for exorcism. Despite his immense power, he is not invincible; his wood-based abilities are inherently vulnerable to metal-based techniques, a tactical weakness he must navigate. Kamon is often accompanied by Beniko, a Yamato Nadeshiko type shikigami who acts as his capable assistant.

Over the course of the narrative, Kamon evolves from a mysterious and potentially antagonistic figure into a more complex and reliable ally. His initial appearances involve unsettling acts, such as casually killing a client who hired him to commit murder, but as his history with Masago is revealed, his motivations become more sympathetic. He is shown to possess a surprisingly loyal and sentimental core, having devoted centuries to a single goal for the woman he loved. He begins to work more closely with Mao and Nanoka, sharing crucial information and directly assisting in battles against powerful ayakashi, as seen when he helps exorcise a cursed piece of fragrant wood. Eventually, the deep-seated resentments from the past come to light, and Kamon confesses that he did in fact have murderous intent toward their master on the fateful night nine hundred years ago, adding significant depth to the mystery of the past.
