Description
Fusatarō Ōsawa, better known by his alias Botaro the Pirate, is a supporting character in the final arc of the Golden Kamuy story. He is one of the tattooed convicts who escaped from Abashiri Prison, making him a key figure in the race for the hidden Ainu gold. His physical appearance is notable for his long black hair and beard, and he is often depicted barefoot and wearing a coat. His fearsome reputation and his preferred method of dispatching his targets by drowning them led to his moniker, Botaro the Pirate.

In terms of personality, Botaro is driven by a grand and pragmatic ambition. Unlike many characters whose goals are rooted in revenge or military strategy, his dream is more personal and almost romantic. He aspires to establish his own private kingdom in the South Seas. This ambition stems from a deep-seated longing for belonging and a place in the world, desiring a family and a home where he will not be forgotten. He possesses a natural charisma that allows him to command a bandit outfit and navigate the complex, shifting alliances of the story.

Botaro’s role in the final season is closely tied to his decision to form a temporary alliance with Sugimoto and his group. He leverages his formidable combat skills and his access to a network of information to aid in the search for the gold. One of his most significant contributions is possessing crucial knowledge about the original location where the Ainu people gathered the gold dust, a key piece of information that could lead to the treasure. His relationship with Yoshitake Shiraishi, the Escape King, is particularly important. Initially, their association is based on mutual benefit, but it deepens into something more profound.

The character undergoes a significant and decisive development during the climactic "Runaway Train Arc". In a moment that defines his arc, Botaro sacrifices himself to save Shiraishi, taking bullets that were meant for his companion. As he lies dying, his motivations become fully clear. He confesses that he "messed up" by saving Shiraishi, but this is a veneer for his true feelings. In his final moments, he passes the gathered tattooed skins he had acquired to Shiraishi and shares the secret Ainu information about the gold's origin. He urges Shiraishi to stop living as a mere escape artist and to make something of himself, entrusting him with the task of ensuring his name and sacrifice are remembered by future generations. This death serves as a pivotal emotional catalyst for Shiraishi, giving him a concrete purpose beyond mere survival.

As a fighter, Botaro is immensely capable, having survived as a convict and a bandit leader. His reputation for drowning his enemies indicates a proficiency in unarmed combat and a brutal efficiency. However, his most notable ability in the final season is arguably his resilience and determination. Even after sustaining fatal wounds, he continues to drive a vehicle long enough to relay critical information to Shiraishi, demonstrating an extraordinary will to see his mission through to the end. His dream of a South Seas kingdom and his dramatic final sacrifice cement his legacy as a man who, despite his criminal life, ultimately acted on a desire for connection and a hope for a future he would not live to see.
