Description
Born March 1998 in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, Gabriel Miller's childhood was shaped by his father's insect specimen collection. Hours spent observing magnified insects fostered an obsession with the source of life, particularly ignited by footage of a decapitated praying mantis moving during mating. He conducted secret experiments, dismantling insects to locate their souls, concluding souls were distributed throughout their bodies. Unable to physically observe a soul, he theorized human souls resided in the brain due to the fatal consequence of decapitation. His childhood friend, Alicia Klingerman, became his subject; he planned marriage to access her soul. When her family faced financial ruin during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and planned to move, Gabriel murdered her in the forest behind his home. During a hug, he inserted an insect specimen needle through her left ear while holding her right. As she died, he perceived a "small glittering cloud" near her forehead, interpreting it as her departing soul, cementing his lifelong fixation.
This obsession extended to Japanese FullDive technology. He learned Japanese and engaged with virtual worlds, notably Gun Gale Online (GGO), under the alias Subtilizer—meaning "soul stealer." In GGO, he achieved legendary status, winning the 1st Bullet of Bullets tournament using only a knife and handgun, and the 4th tournament without carrying weapons. For the latter victory, he employed Army Combatives grappling to ambush opponents, predict movements, disarm them, and kill them with their own weapons. His GGO password was "Yastgutdwiiys," an acronym for "You aren't supposed to give up the demon who is in your soul."
As Chief Tactical Officer of his father's private military company, Glowgen Defense Systems, Gabriel accepted a U.S. National Security Agency contract to assault the Ocean Turtle facility and seize the Soul Translator technology. This device interfaced directly with the human soul (Fluctlight) and had duplicated one. He personally led the operation to obtain it, driven by his desire to witness and capture souls.
Using the Soul Translator, Gabriel entered the Underworld via the super-account of Emperor Vecta, the Dark God ruler of the Dark Territory, described in legends as sleeping in a vault behind a magical lock. His objective was capturing the artificial fluctlight A.L.I.C.E. (Alice Zuberg) and harvesting powerful souls—especially Sword Art Online survivors—to create a customized virtual world for soul experimentation. He orchestrated the Dark Territory Army's invasion of the Human Empire to facilitate Alice's capture. During the war, he authorized sacrificing 3,000 Dark Territory soldiers, including Lenju (wife of Orc leader Lilpilin), to fuel dark mage Dee Eye Ell's catastrophic spells. He murdered the pacifist goblin maiden Lipia by strangulation, consumed her soul, displayed her frozen decapitated head to her fiancé Vixur Ul Shasta, and killed Vixur when he retaliated. Shasta hesitated upon sensing Gabriel's apparent lack of a soul, leading to defeat.
Gabriel manipulated tens of thousands of real-world VRMMO players into the conflict. Subordinates created a fake beta test website for a fictional Japanese game, tricking players into logging into the Underworld. Led by his subordinate Vassago (PoH), these players were deceived into battling American testers, suffering real psychological trauma due to the simulation's lack of pain absorbers and perception of genuine injury or death. Gabriel exploited the chaos between the Human Empire Army, Dark Territory forces, and real-world players to abduct Alice and retreat to the World End Altar. He taunted Integrity Knight Commander Bercouli during their battle, mocking his efforts to save Alice and avenge the dead. Though Bercouli wounded Vecta's avatar, Gabriel fatally wounded him; Bercouli succumbed shortly after.
After Vecta's avatar was destroyed, Gabriel re-entered the Underworld as Subtilizer. He engaged Sinon (in her Sun Goddess Solus avatar) driven by sadistic pleasure, recalling his earlier GGO humiliation of her, attempting to consume her soul through psychological domination. Later, he intercepted Kirito protecting the comatose Alice. Transforming his avatar into a monstrous dark angel, Gabriel sought to consume Kirito's soul by physically tearing into his chest. His attack was partially thwarted by a fragment of Eugeo's fluctlight within Kirito's sword. Throughout these confrontations, Gabriel mocked opponents for self-sacrifice and emotional bonds. His demise occurred when consumed by visions of victimized souls, particularly Alicia, manifesting as grasping hands that dragged him into a hellish void. This fate was explicitly framed as a deserved consequence for his actions.
