Description
Guriko Arakawa is a young practitioner of rakugo, the Japanese art of comedic storytelling, holding the rank of futatsume, which is the second-highest level in the profession. He is a pupil of the respected master Shiguma Arakawa and is part of the Arakawa school.
In terms of appearance, Guriko is a young man with black hair and black eyes. His casual attire often includes a jacket and a t-shirt bearing the word thoughtless, while he dons a traditional white kimono for his stage performances.
Despite a potentially intimidating exterior, Guriko possesses a kind and helpful nature. He carries a strong sense of responsibility and duty, particularly towards his master and fellow pupils. As the youngest of Shiguma's direct students, he shows deep respect for his teacher and his senior classmates, including Kyoji, Koguma, and Maikeru Arakawa. He is notably the most active among the pupils in taking care of household chores for their master.
Guriko's primary role in the story is as an early ally and a senior figure to the protagonist, Akane Osaki. He first discovers Akane when he investigates a rumor that his master is secretly meeting a young woman, only to find that Shiguma has been giving her private rakugo lessons for six years. This misunderstanding leads to their meeting, and Guriko becomes an important person in her journey. He is present for her first performance and takes her under his wing, motivated in part by a personal sense of guilt over his perceived failure to prevent the expulsion of another rakugo artist, Tohru.
His key relationships include his connection with Shiguma, who is strict with him but confident in his abilities as a performer. His relationship with Akane is a positive and supportive one; he recognizes her talent and is dedicated to helping her improve and succeed, viewing this as a form of atonement for his past inaction. He is respected by others in the school, while he himself looks up to his more advanced senior pupils.
Guriko's development is measured by his steady progress in the rakugo world. He spent six years learning the basics from Shiguma before being promoted to the rank of zensa, the opening act, and later achieved the futatsume rank. His abilities as a performer are sufficient for his master to consider him for events, even if an opportunity is ultimately given to the less experienced Akane, highlighting Guriko's reliable competence. He demonstrates a good eye for talent and possesses the practical skills necessary to help guide and calm a novice performer like Akane during her early, nerve-wracking experiences on stage.
