TV-Series
Description
Karyō Ten is a central figure in the narrative, known as the chief strategist of the Hi Shin Unit. She is a young woman who rose from a difficult childhood as a war orphan to become one of the most capable tactical minds in the Qin military.
Her origins lie in the mountains as a descendant of the Kyuumei Tribe, a people who were nearly wiped out in a past conflict with the army of the mountain king Yo Tan Wa. Following the death of her grandfather when she was only five years old, Ten survived on her own in the lawless Kokuhi Village. There, she worked as a lookout for local thugs and outlaws, using her wits to trade information for protection and resources, adhering to her grandfather’s final advice to do whatever was necessary to stay alive.
Ten's path changed forever when she encountered Ri Shin and the young King Ei Sei as they fled from a rebellion. Initially motivated by the promise of riches, she agreed to help them escape. This decision entangled her in the struggle for the Qin throne, after which she was given the choice to return to the mountains with Yo Tan Wa’s tribes or stay on the plains. Having lived among ordinary folk for so long, she felt disconnected from her mountain heritage and chose to remain with Shin.
During peacetime, Ten grew restless watching Shin and their comrade Kyou Kai grow stronger. Realizing she lacked talent for direct combat, she resolved to find a different path to contribute meaningfully to the cause. With a letter of recommendation from Kyou Kai, she enrolled in Shou Hei Kun’s Strategist Academy. There, she studied under Shou Hei Kun, Kai Oku, and Mou Ki, quickly distinguishing herself. Her skill was said to rival that of Mou Ki, the academy’s top student, and she graduated with top honors, receiving special recognition as a genius strategist.
Personality-wise, Ten is incredibly inquisitive, keenly perceptive, and highly pragmatic—traits honed by her harsh survivalist upbringing. She is bold and clear-headed, capable of making difficult decisions under pressure. Her primary motivation is not personal glory or abstract desires, but a deeply personal goal: to support Ri Shin in achieving his dream of becoming the greatest general under the heavens. She has stated this plainly, expressing her wish to help him find happiness.
In her role within the story, Ten serves as the head strategist and tactical advisor for the Hi Shin Unit. She is responsible for directing troop movements, managing logistics, devising battle formations, and outmaneuvering enemy commanders. Her return to the unit as its official strategist marked a turning point, reversing a losing streak and transforming the group into a highly mobile and formidable independent force. She is present for nearly every major campaign, from the Sanyou campaign and the Battle of Kankoku Pass to the Coalition War and the Battle of Kokuyou Hills. One of her greatest achievements was the "Hi Shin Unit-Style River Bridge" strategy, a brilliant maneuver that allowed the unit to cross a river deemed impassable by both allies and enemies.
Key relationships define her journey. She looks up to Ri Shin as an adoptive older brother, and the two share an unbreakable bond of trust. Kyou Kai served as a mentor, inspiring Ten to pursue strategy and facilitating her entry into the academy. She also shares a close friendship with the king, Ei Sei, and has developed important alliances with figures like Heki, Mou Ki, and the mountain tribes led by Yo Tan Wa.
Ten's development is marked by a physical and personal maturation. When first introduced, she had a tomboyish appearance with short hair, leading many, including Shin, to mistake her for a boy. As the series progresses, she grows taller, her hair lengthens, and her appearance becomes distinctly more feminine and mature. Her confidence and strategic expertise also grow immensely, evolving from a self-taught survivor into a master strategist respected across the states.
Regarding her notable abilities, Ten possesses extremely high intelligence and keen observational skills, able to discern details from miles away. Her strategic toolkit includes mastery of both standard and unorthodox military formations. She is also a proven leader who is not afraid to enter the fray to rally and reorganize her troops, making her a lynchpin of the Hi Shin Unit's command structure. While she has little martial prowess, she endures pain exceptionally well, having survived stabs and arrow wounds. For self-defense, she carries a blowgun with numbing darts, a weapon she acquired from an assassin. Outside of combat, she is noted to be an excellent cook.
