Description
Kotobuki Hibiya is a first-year high school student and a close friend of the protagonist Yoi Takiguchi in the anime In the Clear Moonlit Dusk. She attended the same middle school as Yoi and has remained part of a tight-knit circle alongside their mutual friend Nobara Tone. With her pink shoulder-length hair, often styled in a short bob, and bright pink eyes, she carries an upbeat look that matches her outgoing personality.

Cheerful and energetic, Kotobuki is the more vocal and enthusiastic presence within Yoi’s social group. She is deeply fascinated by the “two princes” dynamic between Yoi and Kohaku Ichimura, and she frequently teases Yoi about her growing feelings in a playful, affectionate manner. Despite her lively teasing, Kotobuki is fundamentally caring; her ultimate concern is Yoi’s happiness and emotional well-being. She is perceptive enough to recognize when Yoi needs a gentle nudge or a listening ear, and she often steps in to facilitate social situations that help Yoi open up and feel less isolated by her princely reputation.

In terms of role within the story, Kotobuki functions as a stabilizing and grounding presence. Where Nobara brings emotional reactivity and enthusiastic encouragement, Kotobuki provides practical advice and a calming influence. She treats Yoi without the pedestal that many classmates place her on, making her one of the few people who genuinely see Yoi as a regular girl. This normalcy allows Yoi to relax and be more honest about her vulnerabilities. Kotobuki thereby contributes essential comedic relief and consistent emotional support, staying by Yoi’s side through the highs and lows of her first romantic relationship.

Her key relationships revolve around Yoi and Nobara, with whom she forms a loyal trio. The three friends balance each other: Nobara’s dramatic flair, Yoi’s stoicism and inner turmoil, and Kotobuki’s cheerful, level-headed nature. Together they create a safe, genuine space where Yoi does not have to perform any persona. Kotobuki also interacts occasionally with other characters like Kohaku, but her primary bond is with her girlfriends.

Kotobuki’s development is subtle; she remains a steady friend throughout the series, consistently offering warmth and encouragement. While she does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, her quiet consistency acts as an anchor for Yoi’s growth. She learns when to tease Yoi out of her comfort zone and when to simply stand back and let Yoi make her own choices in love. Her motivations are rooted in friendship: she wants Yoi to be happy, to embrace her true self, and to enjoy the experience of being in love without losing herself.

Her most notable ability is her social intuition. Kotobuki reads the atmosphere of her friend group with care, knowing how to uplift spirits, diffuse tension, and offer practical guidance without making the situation overwhelming. This interpersonal skill makes her an invaluable support character who helps keep Yoi’s journey emotionally grounded and believable.
