Description
Leknaat is a mysterious and enigmatic figure who appears in Suikoden: The Anime as the keeper of the Gate Rune, one of the twenty-seven True Runes, and an overseer of fate itself. She is blind, a condition she suffered when her clan was attacked by forces from the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia, an event that also led to her possession of the back half of the divided Gate Rune. Her sister, Windy, holds the other half. This traumatic past shaped Leknaat into a calm, inscrutable, and seemingly detached observer of the world’s conflicts. She is known as the Keeper of Balance, a title that reflects her overriding motivation: to maintain equilibrium among the forces of the world and to ensure that the True Runes follow their intended course. She does not align herself with any single nation or faction, instead intervening only to nudge events toward a state of balance. Her personality is notably cryptic and reserved; she speaks in riddles and offers advice that is often opaque to those who receive it. She does not act out of personal ambition or malice, but out of a duty to watch over the great scales of fate.
In the story of Suikoden: The Anime, which adapts the events of Suikoden II, Leknaat appears to the main characters Riliu and Jowy, offering guidance and cryptic warnings about the unfolding war between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston. She does not directly participate in battles or take sides, instead functioning as a guiding presence that helps the heroes understand the nature of the 108 Stars of Destiny and the true power of the runes. Her role is that of a silent orchestrator, nudging the course of history without imposing her will. She is particularly connected to Luc, her apprentice, who serves as a more active agent of her will and is herself a highly skilled mage.
Key relationships in the series include her mentorship of Luc, a young mage who carries out tasks on her behalf and shares her concern with balance, albeit with his own evolving emotions. Her sister Windy is a rival figure, as Windy seeks to use the Gate Rune for her own ends, creating a fundamental opposition between the two sisters. Leknaat also interacts with the heroes of each Suikoden generation, though her advice to Riliu and Jowy in the anime is particularly significant given the central conflict of their friendship and the war.
Development-wise, Leknaat remains a constant, unchanging presence throughout the series; she does not undergo a personal arc of growth but rather serves as a fixed point of wisdom and authority. Her character is defined by her consistent, almost impersonal dedication to balance. Notable abilities include her possession of the Gate Rune, which grants her power over gates between worlds and allows her to perceive and influence the threads of fate. Despite her blindness, she has a seer’s insight, able to foresee major events and advise the heroes accordingly. She is also a powerful mage in her own right, capable of summoning and manipulating magical forces.
In Suikoden: The Anime, Leknaat is thus portrayed as an enigmatic, neutral overseer whose actions are always aimed at preserving the world’s equilibrium, even when her motives are not immediately clear to those she helps.
