Description
Geirölul is the fifth of the thirteen Valkyrie sisters, a demigod who plays a crucial role in the tournament of Ragnarok by forging a divine weapon for a human champion. She is selected to stand alongside King Leonidas of Sparta, humanity's representative in the ninth round of the tournament, where they face the Greek god Apollo.
Within the sibling hierarchy of the Valkyries, Geirölul is noted for her distinctly powerful and uncompromising personality. Her youngest sister, Göll, describes her as the proudest among all thirteen sisters. This deep-seated pride is the defining trait of her character, manifesting as an intense aversion to being looked down upon by anyone. She responds with immediate fury to any perceived insult, whether directed at herself, her abilities, or her partner. When Apollo attempted to give Leonidas an advantage out of a sense of superiority, Geirölul was enraged, declaring that the god was "dead meat" for his condescension.
Her personality resonates strongly with that of her Einherjar partner, Leonidas. Both share a defiant spirit and a mutual hatred for those who believe themselves to be above others. This shared worldview creates an exceptionally strong bond between them, allowing them to act and think in unison during the heat of battle. On multiple occasions, they have been shown speaking the same words simultaneously, expressing their shared desire to humble their divine opponent. Despite her aggressive and headstrong nature, Geirölul is not without compassion. She is genuinely devoted to Leonidas's well-being, showing visible panic and concern when he is struck by Apollo's devastating attacks. In moments of extreme danger, her protective instinct overrides her pride, and she has even urged Leonidas to reconsider their reckless strategy for his own safety.
As a Valkyrie, Geirölul possesses innate abilities stemming from her divine physiology. She is semi-immortal, does not age, and possesses physical strength far beyond that of a normal human, with a body that cannot be harmed by mortal weapons. Her primary power, however, is the Common Destiny, a sacred ability that allows her to entrust her very life to a human, awakening their full latent potential and granting them the divine power necessary to harm a god. The ultimate expression of this power is the Völundr, a divine forging process through which she surrenders her physical form to transform into a weapon specifically tailored to her partner's soul and fighting style.
In her Völundr with Leonidas, Geirölul takes the form of an aspis, the iconic heavy shield of a Spartan hoplite. Her chosen form is inscribed with the Greek letter Lambda, symbolizing Lacedaemon, the ancient name for Sparta. While a shield is typically a defensive tool, Geirölul's form proves to be a highly versatile and aggressive offensive weapon, reflecting her combative spirit. The name Geirölul itself is derived from Old Norse, meaning "Spear-wielder" or "The one who charges with a spear," which manifests as the ability to transform the shield into various long-range and heavy-hitting forms.
During the fight, Geirölul's shield transforms through several phases. She becomes a flail, allowing the shield to be swung on a long chain to strike distant targets. She becomes a form combining a rotating saw blade with a flail for devastating slashing attacks. She also takes the form of a heavy, spherical mace attached to a chain for delivering maximum blunt force trauma. In her final, ultimate transformation, she sacrifices all of her mechanical and transforming parts to become Aletheia Spartê, the Truth Shield. In this state, she is a simple, unadorned but incredibly powerful shield. This form maximizes Leonidas's raw offensive power by allowing him to perform a devastating phalanx-style charge, embodying the destructive force of the Spartan army.
Geirölul's development over the course of the ninth round is marked by a shift from open hostility to profound mutual respect. Initially, she admits that she does not like Leonidas, and their partnership begins with a violent clash of wills, featuring her throwing a knife at him, jumping on him, and headbutting him to earn his trust. However, as the battle progresses and she witnesses his unyielding resolve and strength, she is genuinely impressed by him. This respect culminates in a moment of perfect synchronicity as they face their end. Even as her Völundr was forcibly undone and her body began to disintegrate following Apollo's final attack, Geirölul did not waver. Sharing one last thought with Leonidas, she urged him to launch a final attack, determined to inflict as much damage as possible until the very last moment. In the end, Apollo himself acknowledged their warrior spirits by embracing both Leonidas and Geirölul as they perished together, their souls then being banished to Niflhel, the realm of the dead.
