Description
Sakata Kintoki is a legendary human warrior and one of the Einherjar, humanity's champions chosen to fight for survival in Ragnarok. He hails from the Heian period of Japan and was originally known by his childhood name, Kintaro. After becoming a retainer for the renowned demon-slayer Minamoto no Yorimitsu, he took on the name Sakata Kintoki and earned the title of the "Greatest Demon Slayer of the Heian Period" for his unparalleled success in hunting and destroying malevolent oni.
Due to his supernatural origins, Kintoki is often referred to as a "Kind Monster." He is a descendant of the primordial god Gǫllnir, a connection that plays a significant role in his ultimate mission. His appearance is that of a young, strikingly muscular man with short, sharp blond hair. He has a large, distinct scar running from the right side of his forehead down to near the tip of his nose, and he wears a bandana with a horn-like protrusion on the right side of his head. His footwear consists of geta sandals with bladed edges on the soles, similar to ice skates, and his exposed toes feature long, animal-like claws, hinting at his inhuman heritage.
Despite his monstrous strength and fearsome appearance, Kintoki's personality is defined by his remarkable kindness and sincerity. He is a friendly and compassionate individual who inspires deep loyalty and affection from those around him, which has led to him being known as "The Most Beloved Man in Human History". He is often blunt and straightforward, unafraid to gently scold even a god like Buddha, yet he does so out of genuine care. This is shown when he tracks down a recovering Buddha who had left the sick bay and presents him with gifts of candy, a gesture that highlights his thoughtfulness. His loyalty is absolute; he once agreed to undertake a dangerous mission for Buddha before even being told what it was, simply because he had no reason to refuse a friend.
Kintoki's primary motivation is intrinsically linked to his heritage and his duty. He is driven to fulfill the mission of his ancestor, Gǫllnir, which is to stop the supreme Norse god, Odin. The tragic death of his mother, who was killed by her own oni clan as punishment for loving a human, also fuels his resolve. This loss, and his subsequent confrontation with the great demon king Shuten-Doji, forged his path as a demon slayer and solidified his commitment to protecting others from such evil.
In the story, Kintoki serves as humanity's representative in the twelfth round of the Ragnarok tournament, where he is pitted against Odin in a climactic battle. The Valkyrie Brunhilde considers him her best "Anti-Odin" fighter, believing from the very beginning that he is the only human capable of defeating the All-Father. Before his own match, he takes on an undercover role, venturing into the depths of Helheim to investigate the imprisoned demigod Siegfried at Buddha's request. This mission demonstrates his bravery and reliability as he travels through a dangerous realm in chaos after the death of Hades.
His key relationships are defined by deep bonds of friendship and respect. He shares a particularly strong and trusting friendship with Buddha, who sees him as a brother and a reliable confidant. He also has a strong connection to his former master, Minamoto no Yorimitsu, whose group accepted Kintoki as a friend and comrade after he proved his strength and honor in battle, giving him a sense of belonging after his mother's death. For his Volund, or divine weapon, he partners with the Valkyrie Skeggjöld, and unlike some fighters who see their Valkyrie as a tool, he treats her as a vital teammate and strives to bolster her confidence for their battle against Odin.
Kintoki's development in the narrative traces his evolution from a gentle but isolated child known as Kintaro to a celebrated hero. Initially feared by villagers for his superhuman nature and oni lineage, his life changed when he came into contact with Yorimitsu's group. This experience taught him friendship and camaraderie, and after the trauma of losing his mother, he chose to embrace his unique identity and strength rather than be defined by his monstrous origins, declaring himself simply "Kintaro".
His notable abilities are a testament to his legendary status. He possesses godly levels of superhuman strength, a trait he displayed from childhood by wrestling bears. This immense power allows him to effortlessly wield an enormous axe that is larger than his own body. He also has godlike speed, reflexes, and durability, enabling him to keep pace with and endure attacks from Odin himself. As a master combatant and the greatest demon slayer, he is highly skilled with his axe, capable of delivering rapid and powerful strikes. He also uses his bladed geta to skate across surfaces at high speeds, closing distances with incredible agility. His most unique supernatural ability is the Rune of Gǫllnir, a glowing mark on his right palm. This rune allows him to shape and transmute his own divine aura into different forms of matter, granting him a power inherited from his primordial god ancestor and making him a formidable match for a supreme deity like Odin.
