Description
Narushi Sukayu is a third-year student at Binan High School and a member of its Earth Defense Club, an informal group that spends its time lounging in the clubroom and living together in the Kurodama Dormitory. He is one of the five main protagonists of the anime Binan Kōkō Chikyū Bōei-bu Haikara!, a series set in the Taisho era.

Sukayu possesses an intense love for all things beautiful, and among them, he considers himself the most beautiful of all. This supreme narcissism drives him to constantly admire his own reflection and bask in his own elegance. He has won the school’s monthly Pretty Boy Contest, held on the twenty-seventh, a title that reinforces his self-image. His motivation for defending the Earth is tied to his personal aesthetic: he finds the idea of taking action to be stylish, or in the series’ parlance, “haikara” (fashionably modern). When the mysterious cat-like creature Nuru arrives from the future to warn of Earth’s impending doom, Sukayu is eager to join the fight simply because it seems the more glamorous choice.

In the story, Sukayu serves as a key member of the Earth Defense Club alongside Shinkurou Unzen, Sousuke Unohana, Ushio Oshamanbe, and Akuta Aso. The group transforms into the Haikara Romantic Troupe using Nuru’s cat science, gaining nature-based powers to oppose the Earth-conquering Banhara Shin-eitai. Sukayu’s relationships within the club are casual and lazy, with the others occasionally humoring his vanity. He does not undergo major overt development over the course of the series, remaining consistently devoted to his own beauty and to the relaxed, self-indulgent lifestyle of the club. However, his willingness to act when the situation calls for it shows a reliable, if self-absorbed, loyalty to his friends.

While specific abilities are not detailed in available sources, as a transformed member of the Haikara Romantic Troupe, Sukayu likely wields powers themed around his personal aesthetic, such as those related to light, mirrors, or elegance, in keeping with the series’ pattern of each character drawing on a natural motif. His notable trait is his unwavering self-admiration, which sets him apart as the group’s resident narcissist and provides a consistent source of comedic contrast with the more earnest or laid-back members of the club.
