Description
Daisuke Kambe is a main character in the Fugou Keiji franchise. Heir to the billionaire Kambe dynasty, he wields immense wealth and advanced technology to solve criminal cases using aggressive, unconventional methods. As a detective within the Metropolitan Police Department's Modern Crime Prevention Task Force, he partners with Haru Katou; their starkly opposing approaches to police work initially fuel significant friction.
A traumatic childhood event defines his motivation. Daisuke witnessed his father, Shigemaru Kambe, standing over his murdered mother, Sayuri Kambe, leading him to believe his father was the killer. This drove him into law enforcement to uncover the truth. Investigations later revealed Shigemaru discovered Sayuri's body but did not kill her; the real murderer was linked to a cover-up concerning her research on "adollium," a potent energy source coveted by government and corporate entities. Falsely implicated, Shigemaru attempted suicide, entering a vegetative state. The conspiracy surrounding his mother's death implicated police higher-ups and resulted in the murders of colleagues Chosuke Nakamoto and Katsuhiro Takei, prompting Daisuke's resignation to pursue justice independently.
Physically, Daisuke has a young appearance with dull blue-gray eyes, thick eyebrows, and short black hair usually slicked back, though it falls unevenly across his forehead when unstyled. He dresses meticulously, favoring layered attire such as a black three-piece suit, a maroon dress shirt with a white collar, dark brown dress shoes, a black-and-gray-striped tie secured with a tie bar, and rectangular cufflinks. Accessories include a watch and a ball-shaped earring housing HEUSC, his artificial intelligence butler. He occasionally adds a black topcoat, gloves, and sunglasses. His casual wear consists of a white dress shirt, gray waistcoat, and black pants. His shoes feature hidden lifts, initially five centimeters and later seven, added by his relative Suzue Kambe.
Daisuke's personality exhibits intense calmness and composure, rarely showing agitation even under duress, often perceived as aloof or arrogant. He operates on the conviction that money resolves any problem, frequently employing bribery, deploying extravagant technology, or making outright purchases during investigations—such as acquiring a prince's car mid-chase or buying entire buildings to corner suspects. This wealth-driven pragmatism starkly conflicts with partner Haru Katou's principles of human connection and ethical policing. Despite this, Daisuke demonstrates competence in crisis management, multilingualism (including Japanese, Arabic, and implied English), and combat, particularly boxing. Exposure to Haru's values and the emotional weight of his parents' case gradually shifts his worldview, reducing his sole reliance on wealth and fostering a degree of teamwork.
His primary tool is HEUSC, the AI butler integrated into his earring and sunglasses, handling real-time financial transactions (often compensating double for damages), data analysis, hacking, and communication. Resources include customized gear like a camouflaging black leather "spy catsuit" and gadgets engineered by Suzue Kambe, who provides technological support and undercover assistance. Situations without access to funds—like leaving his wallet behind—force him into ordinary life, highlighting unfamiliarity with basic tasks such as grocery shopping or cooking.
Key relationships shape his journey. His dynamic with Haru evolves from hostile "teeth-clenched teamwork" to mutual, if grudging, respect, solidified by shared tragedies like Nakamoto and Takei's deaths. Relative and tech specialist Suzue Kambe shares a close bond; he trusts her competence despite dangerous assignments. Familial ties involve devotion to his deceased mother, hatred for his falsely accused father, and tension with his grandmother Kikuko, who withholds information about Sayuri's research. Trivia notes include overcoming a dislike of natto, hobbies like cigar smoking and boxing, and an appearance in Gosho Aoyama’s "Detective Picture Book" within a Detective Conan volume.
