Description
Granit, whose real name is Luka, is a character from the anime Digimon Beatbreak. He is a thirteen-year-old boy with dark skin, orange eyes, and black hair styled with a fringe and parted bangs tied into a short ponytail. Standing at 150 centimeters tall, he typically wears an oversized, dark green turtleneck jacket with grey buttons, dark blue pants, and black boots. The logo of his organization, Tactics, appears on his left sleeve. His birthday is March 15th, and he has B blood type.
Granit's background is marked by profound tragedy. As a child, he was a war refugee living in a camp during a conflict in his home country. There, he befriended a girl named Stella, who would steal chewing gum to give him. The refugee camp was eventually destroyed by a missile attack. As he and Stella tried to escape, their hands slipped apart, and she was presumably killed in the explosion. At that moment, his Sapotama hatched into his partner Digimon, Ludomon, whose shield protected Granit from the blast. This event left him as the sole survivor and burdened him with immense survivor's guilt.
Due to this trauma, Granit developed a personality that is unfriendly, stoic, and lacking in emotional highs or lows. His driving motivation is a constant search for a place to die, feeling that he should not have survived when Stella did not. At some point, the organization Tactics placed a bounty on him, but his Ludomon single-handedly defeated the Cleaners sent to capture him. Following this, a Tactics leader named Seraphy Naito offered him a deal; recognizing Granit's death wish, Naito told him he could fulfill it by sacrificing his life for the organization. Granit accepted and became a member of Tactics Team Seven, taking on the code name Granit, a name derived from the mineral granite. He joined not out of loyalty but as a means to an end, following orders as a soldier awaiting a suitable opportunity to die.
Within the story, Granit serves as a major antagonist during the Tactics Arc. He is a Cleaner, a role that involves eliminating specific targets. His role often puts him in direct conflict with the main group, Glowing Dawn. In a significant turn of events during a mission, he becomes stranded in a frozen wilderness with Reina Sakuya, a member of Glowing Dawn. Forced into an enemy mine situation, they must cooperate to survive. Despite their organizations being opposed, Reina shows him compassion, caring for him when he is injured and attempting to understand him. This encounter does not immediately change Granit, and he returns to Tactics still harboring his death wish, but the experience highlights the stark contrast between his cold, transactional team and the familial bonds of Glowing Dawn.
Granit's most significant relationship is with his partner Digimon, Ludomon. Ludomon was born from Granit's own will to live and his desire to protect Stella, making the Digimon a direct reflection of a part of Granit's true nature that he tries to suppress. While Granit actively seeks death, Ludomon consistently works to protect him, refusing to let him give up even when Granit himself has accepted death. For example, when Granit was buried alive and told his partner to leave him, Ludomon instead roused him. This dynamic creates a poignant tension, as Ludomon represents the survival instinct Granit denies. His connection to the rest of Team Seven, including members like Raito Souda and Hotaruko Kanuma, is largely professional and lacks warmth; they are colleagues and co-workers rather than friends, and there is little expectation of personal loyalty.
In terms of abilities, Granit's combat prowess is closely tied to his partner, Ludomon. Ludomon is a Digimon that can take the form of a shield, and it has the ability not only to block attacks but also to absorb and reflect them back at opponents. This makes Granit and Ludomon a formidable defensive pair. Granit himself has displayed considerable survival skills and tactical thinking, as seen when he and Reina devised a plan to escape their predicament by forcing their enemy to retreat through a dimensional portal and following them. The anime also establishes that Ludomon belongs to the Legend Arms, a special classification of Digimon capable of transforming into equipment for other Digimon to wield. Over time, as he confronts his past and his relationship with his partner, Granit begins a difficult journey of personal development, slowly learning to acknowledge the will to live that Ludomon represents. He finds small comforts in his likes, which are remnants of his happier past: stargazing, which he used to do with Stella, and chewing gum, which she used to steal for him.
