Description
Akira Akao is a supporting character who is introduced as a first-year student at the Japan Contractor Company, an elite assassin training academy. Her primary motivation stems from her deep admiration for her aunt, Rion Akao, a legendary assassin. Contrary to her parents' suggestion that she become a housekeeper, Akira chose to follow in her aunt's footsteps to uncover the truth about her aunt's mysterious disappearance and eventual death. This quest for answers is the driving force behind her actions throughout the story.
In terms of appearance, Akira is a petite, fair-skinned young woman with distinctive turquoise or blue hair that has lilac or purple tips, which she typically keeps in a messy, low ponytail with bangs framing her face. She shares her aunt's most notable feature: warm orange-yellow eyes with white pupils. Her clothing style is practical and casual, often consisting of leather jackets in colors like black or green paired with simple t-shirts and baggy pants.
Akira's personality is a complex blend of contrasting traits. On the surface, she is kind-hearted, shy, and easily scared, particularly when alone or in unfamiliar environments like the JCC during her first week. She is naturally caring and often puts the needs of others before her own, which can lead to her being pushed into difficult situations. However, beneath this gentle exterior lies a determined and formidable individual. She has a hidden bloodthirsty side that emerges when her friends are threatened, and in such moments, she has no qualms about injuring or even killing her opponents. This aggressive state is a trait that seems to run in her family, but once she snaps out of it, she is shown to be averse to killing.
Her role in the story begins during the intense JCC entrance exams, where her quick thinking and unique skills immediately set her apart. She forms a close partnership with Shin Asakura, recognizing him as a fellow newcomer and working together with him and Natsuki Seba to navigate the challenges of the academy and search for information about her aunt. Taro Sakamoto acts as a mentor figure to her, and his amazement at her skills leads to him questioning her about her family name, revealing her connection to his past. Her most pivotal moment of development occurs when the film-obsessed assassin Kanaguri reveals that her aunt Rion is dead. This revelation triggers her darker side and pushes her onto a path of revenge, leading her to form an uneasy alliance with Kanaguri himself, agreeing to be the lead in his film in exchange for his help in reaching her aunt's killer, Kei Uzuki.
Akira's most notable ability is her power to see "paths," a technique taught to her by her aunt Rion. This allows her to visualize imaginary lines representing potential assassination routes to eliminate a target, enabling her to strategically plan attacks by considering multiple approaches simultaneously. When facing a significantly stronger opponent, however, she perceives an impassable cliff instead of clear paths, which can cause her to hesitate. Beyond her combat skills, Akira is a masterful sewer, capable of incredibly fast and precise stitching. This seemingly domestic skill proves crucial when she sews a functional parachute from clothing while falling from a plane, saving herself and her peers. She also claims that housework like cleaning and laundry are among her strongest skills, a testament to her practical upbringing. Despite her training, she has notable weaknesses, including an inability to swim and a sensitivity to the sight of blood.
