TV-Series
Description
Jirō Kusano, commonly known as Roji (a reversal of "Jirō"), serves as the assistant to Toru Muhyo at their supernatural investigation bureau. His path toward magic law stems from a childhood incident where his friend became possessed, leading to an encounter with an executor who exorcised the spirit. After failing the entrance exam for the practitioner academy, he accidentally attended an interview for Muhyo's assistant position, drawn by a sign stating "No magic law experience needed." During a subsequent grudge attack, his innate tempering caused a staff to flare, damaging the spirit and catching Muhyo's attention. This event culminated in Muhyo selecting him as an assistant after recognizing his honesty and selflessness.

Roji exhibits profound kindness, optimism, and empathy, frequently seeing the good in people and spirits. This idealism occasionally leaves him vulnerable to exploitation by malicious entities. Initially portrayed as anxious and prone to crying, he develops greater resilience and dependability across the series. He struggles with confidence due to his low rank (beginning as a Second Clerk) and lack of formal training, compensating through diligent study. His emotional nature contrasts with Muhyo's sternness, yet his unwavering support proves vital to their partnership. Roji dislikes ghosts and frightening situations but possesses a unique inner strength rooted in compassion. He finds solace in tea, sweets, cooking, and "cute things," and enjoys "Super-Fab-Tech"—a talent for engineering intricate crafts and costumes. He experiences motion sickness in fast vehicles and wears contact lenses due to nearsightedness.

His magical abilities involve using a pen to create seals for attack, defense, or support. He masters "Direct Binding," inscribing spells directly onto spirits to immobilize them. Though initially limited, his power fluctuates with confidence, revealing unexpected potential during critical moments. A bolo tie ("The Swallow that Defies the Wind"), gifted by executor Page Klaus, suppresses his natural tempering—which previously attracted spirits—and stabilizes his abilities. This artifact links to their first encounter: Page exorcised a spirit from Roji's friend years earlier, foreshadowing Roji’s connection to Muhyo.

Roji’s relationship with Muhyo evolves from perceived disdain to mutual reliance; Muhyo secretly values his integrity and hidden potential. Roji deeply admires Muhyo, finding him "adorable" and prioritizing his well-being. His empathy extends to allies like Nana Takenouchi and adversaries like Enchu, whom he views with sorrow rather than hatred. Romantic implications arise with Reiko Imai, a judge who escorts him to magic law school and develops feelings for him. His role as the "Heart" of the team often disrupts antagonists' plans, notably becoming a "spanner in the works" for the villain Teeki.

Across the series, Roji grows from a hesitant assistant to a proactive partner. He risks his life to protect Muhyo during battles, demonstrating courage against formidable foes like Teeki. His engineering skills prove instrumental in devising solutions during missions. By the narrative's conclusion, he rises to First Clerk and solidifies his indispensable role in the bureau, embodying the thematic balance between innate kindness and burgeoning resolve.
