Description
Gerard Valkyrie is a major antagonist in the final arc of the Bleach manga, serving as a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation M, which stands for Miracle. He also holds the position of being one of the four members of Yhwach's personal Schutzstaffel, or elite guard. His most significant and defining background is that he is not merely a powerful Quincy, but the physical manifestation of the Reio, the Soul King's, heart. This divine origin is directly linked to the source of his immense power and unusual abilities.
In terms of appearance, Gerard is a towering and muscular man, standing at an imposing 222 centimeters tall. He has light, shoulder-length golden hair and typically wears a distinctive helmet adorned with wing-like ornaments, alongside a red cape, black trousers, and armor on his limbs. His personality is as large as his physique; he is characterized as being boisterous, aggressive, and utterly confident in his own invincibility. Among the usually stoic Schutzstaffel, Gerard is the most overtly prideful and is driven by a personal code of honor and glory in battle. He openly scorns those he deems weak or without accomplishments, once stating that members who fail to earn merit deserve execution. Despite his arrogance, he shows a surprising degree of camaraderie with his allies, expressing approval for their actions and even assisting them physically when needed. He faces combat with a wide grin and a love for direct confrontation, often deliberately putting himself in the center of multiple opponents to demonstrate his overwhelming might.
Gerard's role in the story is to act as an unyielding physical obstacle for the Gotei 13's captains during the final battle in the Wahrwelt. After the Schutzstaffel annihilates Zero Division, he remains in the newly formed Wahrwelt to intercept the Shinigami forces rushing to confront Yhwach. His narrative function is to demonstrate the hopelessness of fighting against a being whose strength is rooted in a fundamental law of reality. His key relationships are defined by his service. He is utterly loyal to Yhwach, the progenitor of all Quincies, viewing his own divine power as a tool to serve his master's will. He fights alongside the other members of the Schutzstaffel: Lille Barro, Pernida Parnkgjas, and Askin Nakk Le Vaar. Though he holds the lowest rank among them as a mere soldier, his power rivals or surpasses his peers, and he is treated as a crucial component of Yhwach's divine army.
The development of Gerard Valkyrie is unique, as his character arc is defined not by change, but by the escalating manifestation of his static, overwhelming power. Unlike characters who learn or grow, Gerard simply becomes more of what he already is: an embodiment of an absolute concept. His major confrontation is against a combined force of Gotei 13 captains, including Byakuya Kuchiki, Kenpachi Zaraki, and Toshiro Hitsugaya. As they push him to his limits, tearing his body apart, his ability activates repeatedly, transforming him from a large warrior into a colossal, god-like giant known as the "Giant of Light". His development is one of scale and form rather than personality, escalating from a confident soldier to a nearly silent, cataclysmic force of nature.
Gerard's notable abilities are rooted in his status as a high-level Quincy. He can perform standard techniques like wielding a spirit weapon, which manifests as a large, black double-edged sword named the "Hoffnung" (German for "Hope"). However, his true power lies in his unique Schrift, The Miracle. This ability takes any form of damage, fear, or "negative" phenomenon inflicted upon him and reverses it into a corresponding gain in size, strength, and spiritual pressure. The more his opponents injure him, the larger and more powerful he becomes. If his body is completely destroyed, he can enter his Quincy: Vollständig form, called 'God's Power', which resurrects him with even greater might, complete with angelic wings, a halo, a massive sun-shaped shield, and the ability to fire colossal arrows of reishi. In his final state, he becomes a towering, faceless "Giant of Light" whose sheer presence overwhelms the battlefield. The only known method to defeat him, aside from being depowered by Yhwach, is to destroy the small quincy cross that serves as the core of his existence.
