Description
Hizashi Yamada, known as the Voice Hero Present Mic, is a Pro Hero and the English teacher at U.A. High School. In My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which takes place several years before the main series, his role expands significantly by revealing his past as a student at U.A. alongside his close friends Shota Aizawa (Eraserhead) and Oboro Shirakumo.
As a young man, Yamada already possesses the loud, high-energy, and flamboyant personality that would define his adult persona. He is talkative, straightforward, and deeply caring, often calling those around him his listeners even in casual conversation. This public-facing enthusiasm masks a more serious and sensitive side, particularly when it comes to protecting those he cares about. The Vigilantes backstory highlights the formation of his unbreakable bond with the stoic and often pessimistic Aizawa, with Yamada’s bright and persistent nature complementing his friend’s darker disposition. Their friendship is a central element, and it is during these school years that Yamada famously comes up with Aizawa’s hero name, Eraserhead.
The most pivotal event explored in Vigilantes is the tragic death of their mutual friend, Oboro Shirakumo. Yamada and Aizawa are both present during a work-study incident that leads to Shirakumo being crushed by a collapsing building. This loss has a profound and lasting impact on him. While Aizawa becomes more withdrawn, Yamada copes by channeling his grief into his work, eventually taking on multiple roles as a teacher, a radio DJ, and a Pro Hero. The Vigilantes story makes it clear that this trauma is a key motivation for his career path; alongside Aizawa, he becomes a teacher at U.A. to ensure future generations of students do not suffer a similar fate and to guide them toward a more balanced view of heroism.
Regarding his role in the narrative of Vigilantes, Yamada serves primarily as a secondary character whose presence enriches the world-building and deepens the audience’s understanding of the main series' faculty. He does not drive the main plot revolving around the vigilante Koichi Haimawari, but instead appears in flashback sequences that detail his and Aizawa’s formative years. These sequences are crucial for explaining their motivations and the source of their unwavering trust in each other. His character development is subtle but significant, showing the transition from a carefree, if loud, student to a hero burdened by the weight of a friend’s death, a burden he carries privately while maintaining his loud public image.
Notable abilities are tied directly to his Quirk, Voice, which allows him to amplify his voice to destructive levels, generating powerful shockwaves capable of shattering buildings and rupturing eardrums from a long distance. Even as a newborn, his cry was strong enough to injure the doctors and his own parents. He wears a specialized directional speaker system on his neck to focus and project his sonic attacks. His signature techniques include Loud Voice, a wide-area attack; Echo Voice, which creates lingering reverberating shockwaves; and more physical moves like the DJ Punch. Despite his power, he has notable weaknesses, including a severe phobia of insects and a general dislike of forests, which can render him nearly helpless in certain situations, and his sound-based attacks are less effective against targets moving underground.
