Description
Kanata Katagiri, born Kanata Rivington, is a young man of mixed heritage, being half-Japanese and half-British. He was raised in Cambridge, England, and travels to Japan at the age of nineteen with two primary goals. His mother is British, while his estranged Japanese father is Ken Katagiri. Upon arriving in Japan, he stays with the Saionji family, who are old friends of his parents, and begins his search for his father.
In terms of personality, Kanata is consistently presented as calm, polite, humble, and respectful. He tends to feel embarrassed when receiving praise and is not one to brag about his talents. Despite his gentle demeanor off the track, he becomes intensely focused, fearless, and highly calculating when behind the wheel. He is hardworking and kind-hearted, driven more by personal fulfillment than by material gain.
Kanata’s primary motivation for participating in the MFG racing competition is to locate his missing father. He races under the pseudonym Kanata Katagiri, using his father’s surname as a way to potentially catch his attention. Beyond this personal quest, his goal is to push himself to his limits. Unlike many competitors, he is not driven by a desire for wealth or a lavish lifestyle; his ideal life is a simple, grounded one, working alongside others.
His role in the story is that of a rookie competitor with a mysterious background. Despite a two-year gap from racing prior to his arrival, he immediately draws attention for his exceptional technique and composure. He enters MFG driving a Toyota 86 GT, a car significantly less powerful than the supercars he competes against, making his success a testament to his skill rather than his machinery. He qualifies for the finals in fifteenth place after a competitor is disqualified, and quickly begins challenging the top-ranked drivers.
Kanata’s key relationships are central to both his personal life and his racing career. He lives with the Saionji family, and their daughter, Ren Saionji, becomes his closest friend and love interest. Ren falls in love with him at first sight and helps him search for his father. He is supported by Ogata, the owner of the Toyota 86, who serves as his exclusive mechanic and operator, handling the car's maintenance and tuning. Kanata also befriends fellow racer Shun Aiba, who comes to respect his abilities, though this relationship becomes complicated by their shared feelings for Ren. Most significantly, he is the direct student of the legendary driver Takumi Fujiwara, from whom he learned his driving techniques at the Royal Donington Park Racing School (RDRS) in the UK.
Kanata’s development is rooted in his past achievements and future aspirations. Before arriving in Japan, he had a distinguished racing career, starting in karts at age four and winning six major British Kart Championships by age nine. He entered the F4 Championship at ten and won the title after two years. He was a top student at RDRS, achieving the best overall score in the school’s history on his graduation exam. After graduating, he rejected numerous sponsorship offers to return home and care for his ailing mother. Two years later, he entered MFG, aiming to balance his professional ambitions with his personal search for his father. Throughout the competition, he gradually builds a reputation, gains rivals and supporters, and his relationship with Ren deepens from friendship to romance.
Kanata possesses several notable abilities as a driver. He has an eidetic, or photographic, memory, allowing him to perfectly memorize track layouts, road conditions, and car positions with high precision. This ability also helps him read and remember Japanese kanji despite not being fluent in reading and writing the language. His driving style is smooth, clean, and highly technical, emphasizing car control and strategy over raw power. He employs a number of specific techniques inherited from his mentor, including the Disappearing Line to move into an opponent’s blind spot, left-foot braking, the gutter run to avoid understeer, and a technique known as the Sidewalk Run, which involves using the curb or sidewalk to gain an advantage. He is also a master of late braking and excels at reading opponents’ movements while maintaining stability at high speeds, even in challenging conditions like rain and fog.
