Description
Kōki Sawatari is a professional road racer competing in the MFG series, the premier public-road racing championship set in a near-future Japan. He drives the Alpine A110, including later upgraded versions such as the A110S and A110R, and he finished fourth overall in the fourth year of MFG. At twenty-one years old, Sawatari is a highly skilled driver who honed his technique through racing in France before returning to Japan.

His background includes a stint in the Euro F3 category, where he faced Kanata Rivington, who later enters MFG under the pseudonym Kanata Katagiri. Sawatari lost to Kanata in that series primarily due to Kanata having access to superior equipment, and he carries a deep desire for revenge, making Kanata a key rival on the MFG stage. This history is known to only a few people, including some of the MFG officials.

Sawatari’s personality is notably narcissistic and hedonistic. He openly admits to having a “seventeen complex,” meaning he has a strong preference for seventeen-year-old women, and his current girlfriend, Sana, is a high school student of that age. He frequently treats racing as a way to earn money for dates and often prioritizes his relationship over racing obligations. Despite this frivolous exterior, he possesses extraordinary focus and explosive speed when he becomes serious behind the wheel. He is regarded as one of the few drivers whose latent potential could rival the series’ top driver, Michael Beckenbauer.

In the story, Sawatari functions as a major rival for Kanata, serving as a benchmark for Kanata’s European-developed skills. He is also a key player in the top-tier battles, often pushing Beckenbauer and Kanata to their limits. His role adds unpredictability to the racing narrative because his motivation fluctuates between personal pleasure and pure competitive drive. Beyond his rivalry with Kanata, he shares a mutual respect with Beckenbauer, recognizing him as the ultimate wall to overcome. He is also acknowledged by veteran figures such as Keisuke Takahashi, who sees Sawatari’s talent as exceptional.

Sawatari’s development centers on his growing seriousness about racing as he faces stronger competition. His notable abilities include an almost instinctive feel for a car’s limits, particularly with the lightweight, mid-engined Alpine. He is known for his sharp tactical sense and ability to set blistering pace when he decides to commit fully to the race.
