Leomon, a Beastkin Digimon species titled the "King of Beasts" and "Noble Hero," possesses a strong will and heart of justice, driving him to oppose destructive forces and battle fiendish Digimon. His design features orange fur, a yellow mane, blue eyes, black claws, and scars marking his arms and left foot. He wears black pants secured by yellow cords and a belt, carrying the sentient magical sword "Beast Sword" or Shishiou-maru at his waist. His primary rival is Ogremon, known as the "Digimon Hunter," though their clashes often shift into reluctant alliances against larger threats. Daily rigorous training hones his combat prowess, enabling swift attacks and resilience against diverse assaults. Signature techniques include the "Fist of the Beast King" (Jūouken), projecting a lion-shaped aura from his fist, and the "Lion Sword" (Shishiou-maru), unleashing multiple strikes. Other documented attacks are "Hyakujūken," "Shockwave," and "Smashing Kick."
Brainwashed by Devimon's "Touch of Evil" during his initial appearance, he attacks protagonists before a Digivice's light temporarily frees him, allowing him to defend the group. Later augmented by Black Gears, he gains increased size and darkened coloration, overwhelming opponents like Garurumon and Greymon until liberated. He then aids the final confrontation against Devimon and helps construct a raft to the Server continent. During the Dark Masters' takeover, exposure to Digivices' light grants him the ability to warp-digivolve directly to his Mega form, SaberLeomon. In this form, he rescues allies from MetalEtemon, engages the foe, intercepts an attack meant for a human companion—sustaining mortal injuries—and exploits a crack in MetalEtemon's armor to destroy him. Reverting to Leomon, he dies shortly after reconciling with Ogremon, his data awaiting rebirth at Primary Village.
Later, he protects Primary Village and Elecmon from an infected Ogremon while observed by a disguised antagonist. He intervenes in the human world to thwart Ogremon's attacks, explaining the infection afflicting Digimon to protagonists. While overseeing their partner Digimon, he permits them to attend a festival under his supervision. During the event, he succumbs to the infection, battles an infected Imperialdramon, regains momentary clarity to aid allies, and receives a fatal blow from an instinctively reacting Meicoomon. This death in the human world is permanent under normal circumstances. A separate Leomon partners with an unnamed DigiDestined, joining allies like Vegiemon and Tyrannomon to repel Eosmon entities attempting to abduct humans; the group survives due to external interventions.
Across various media, members of the Leomon species frequently meet sacrificial deaths, including in *Tamers* (killed by Beelzemon), *Frontier* (IceLeomon defeated in battle), *Data Squad* (BanchoLeomon's sacrifice), and *X-Evolution* (early demise). This established a narrative pattern, though recent series like *Adventure 2020* and *Ghost Game* avoided the trope. His character embodies nobility and selflessness, with his repeated deaths underscoring thematic weight regarding sacrifice and permanence in the franchise's lore.
