Description
Captain Kidd is a character from the animated television series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. He is a Plitsky, a bird-like alien species, and operates as a pirate and smuggler across interstellar space, commanding his own vessel known as the Iron Falcon. His primary motivation is self-interest; he is a totally self-serving mercenary who cruises the galaxy in search of wealth and power. He has a wife named Miss Kidd, though she is not a prominent figure in his adventures.
In his initial appearance, Captain Kidd is portrayed as a menacing figure, though with a bumbling aspect to his personality. He is responsible for capturing the ship that was transporting the Foxx family, which directly led to the severe injury of Ranger Captain Zachary Foxx and the subsequent kidnapping of Eliza Foxx's mind by the Queen of the Crown. Despite this villainous start, his alignment is not fixed. After being double-crossed by the Queen, who refused to let him keep his prize and took control of the situation away from him, he turned against her. This act made him a wanted man, and he subsequently cut a deal with the Galaxy Rangers, offering his aid in exchange for a trade alliance and his continued freedom.
His role in the story is therefore that of a wild card, a character who rides the line between being an enemy, a neutral party, and an occasional nuisance or asset to the Ranger team. His personality is described as being reminiscent of a combination of the boisterous Foghorn Leghorn and the cunning Long John Silver. While the series creator, Robert Mandell, originally intended for Kidd to be a much more threatening antagonist, he evolved to serve a different function in the narrative, often providing information or assistance to the Rangers for his own benefit. For example, he helped BETA make first contact with the xenophobic Traash and sold counterfeit starstones to the Crown. When these fakes powered an armada threatening Earth, Kidd informed the Rangers of their critical weakness, allowing them to easily destroy much of the Crown's fleet, making him indirectly responsible for their defeat. His notable abilities include a powerful scream or whistle, and he commands a motley crew of unusual alien beings.
