Description
Lise Azumino is the main protagonist of the anime film Fushigi no Kuni de Alice to -Dive in Wonderland-. She is a university student in her late teens who finds herself at a crossroads in life, struggling with the pressure to make decisions about her future and feeling that she does not fit in despite trying to follow the expectations of those around her. Her late grandmother, Fumiko Azumino, left behind an invitation letter that guides Lise into a fantastical realm called Wonderland, where she meets a young girl named Alice. The two embark on a journey together through a strange and whimsical world filled with familiar characters from Lewis Carroll’s stories, such as the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts.
Lise’s personality at the start is marked by uncertainty, anxiety, and a tendency to overthink. She is cautious and tries to read the room, but her efforts to blend in often lead to frustration. Her journey through Wonderland serves as a catalyst for personal growth, pushing her to confront her fears, embrace spontaneity, and discover her own sense of purpose. Her motivations are rooted in a desire to find direction in her life, and Wonderland’s chaotic, rule-defying nature forces her to let go of rigid expectations.
In the story, Lise acts as an audience surrogate, guiding viewers through the reimagined Wonderland while also serving as a companion to Alice. Her relationship with Alice is central; Alice is bold, curious, and unafraid of the strange world, which contrasts with Lise’s initial hesitation. Their friendship helps Lise develop confidence and a clearer sense of self. Lise also interacts with numerous Wonderland inhabitants, each encounter contributing to her transformation. Her grandmother’s legacy—the invitation and the connection to Wonderland—plays a significant role in her emotional arc, as Lise reconciles with her past and her family history.
Over the course of the film, Lise undergoes a noticeable character development. She starts as someone who feels lost and pressured by societal expectations, but through her adventures and her bond with Alice, she learns to trust her instincts and find her own path. Her notable abilities are not supernatural; rather, she relies on her growing resilience, empathy, and willingness to adapt. The film emphasizes her internal journey over any special powers, and her growth is shown through her changing attitudes and decisions. By the end, Lise emerges more self-assured, ready to face the real world with a renewed sense of purpose.
