Description
Mémé Turbo, also known as Turbo Granny, is a yōkai who first appears as the primary antagonist in the early arc of the story. She is based on a modern Japanese urban legend of a supernaturally fast elderly woman, often called the Turbo Baachan, who haunts roads and tunnels. In the series, she takes residence in a tunnel in Shōnō City, where she terrorizes anyone who enters her territory. Before the events of the story, she was known to wander and comfort the spirits of young girls who had died tragic and violent deaths, but over time her nature became more malicious, leading her to curse and rob victims of their genitalia as a form of supernatural extortion.

Mémé Turbo initially appears as a small, hunched old woman with dark, wrinkled skin, hollow eyes, and disheveled white hair. Her appearance is deliberately unsettling, emphasizing her nature as a menacing spirit. Her personality is crude, foul-mouthed, sadistic, and easily provoked. She speaks with a rough, vulgar tone and is quick to anger and boast. Despite her cruel exterior, the story reveals that she once had a protective side, specifically toward young women who died unjustly, which hints at a more complex moral nature beneath her abrasive behavior.

Her most defining ability is her incredible speed, which allows her to run at a consistent one hundred kilometers per hour, earning her the former nickname of Hundred Kilometer Granny. She can also move through phone lines and electrical cables, allowing her to travel across great distances almost instantly. When she defeats someone in a race, she places a curse on them that steals their genitalia, which she treats as a source of power. She can also possess her victims, taking full control of their bodies and using their abilities. Mémé Turbo has the power to transform her own form, shifting into a more monstrous shape, including a gigantic serpent-like entity, and can merge with other spirits to amplify her strength. She possesses immense spiritual energy and is considered powerful enough that even the seasoned medium Seiko Ayase warns others to avoid direct confrontation with her.

Mémé Turbos role in the story begins when the protagonist Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okarun, visits her tunnel to prove the existence of ghosts. She easily defeats him in a race, steals his testicles, and curses his body, forcing him into a pact with the other protagonist, Momo Ayase. This event serves as the central catalyst for the entire series, as Okarun and Momo must work together to recover what was taken. After a fierce battle involving Momo, Okarun, and Seiko, Mémé Turbo is defeated but not destroyed. Instead, Seiko seals her consciousness inside a maneki-neko, a lucky cat figurine, while her power remains with Okarun, granting him the ability to transform and use her speed and strength.

Trapped in the cat doll, Mémé Turbo becomes a reluctant ally and mentor to Okarun. She agrees to help him and Momo locate his stolen testicles in exchange for the eventual return of her full power. In this form, she continues to speak with her characteristic rudeness and vulgarity, but also provides valuable advice about the supernatural world, teaches Okarun how to control his inherited abilities, and uses her knowledge to guide the group through various threats. She forms a particularly amusing dynamic with Seiko, often bickering with her but also cooperating when necessary.

Throughout her time with the group, Mémé Turbo develops a grudging respect for the young protagonists, especially Momo, whom she sees as a strong-willed young woman worth protecting. When Okarun eventually recovers his testicles, her obligation is fulfilled, and she leaves the group, taking back her power and parting on surprisingly amicable terms. Despite her departure, her influence remains central to the story, as her power shaped Okaruns abilities and her teachings helped the group survive numerous encounters. Her character arc moves from a purely antagonistic force to a complex figure who, while still selfish and coarse, shows glimmers of the compassion she once had for the spirits of the dead, making her one of the most memorable and multifaceted entities in the series.
