Description
Demone di Dover, also known as Mr. Mantis Shrimp, is a character who initially appears as an antagonist hired by the Serpoian aliens. His physical form is a unique blend of earthly creatures and humanoid traits, presenting as a muscular humanoid figure with yellow skin, a head resembling a crab or mantis shrimp, and large, round eyes. He is almost always seen wearing only a pair of striped swimming briefs, a necktie, and bright red boxing gloves, which immediately signals his role as a physical combatant.
The driving force behind all of his actions is his profound love for his family. A widower, Demone di Dover lost his wife to a serious illness, and his young son, Chiquitita, has inherited the same condition. The disease causes the boy to require regular and expensive blood transfusions to survive. Because he was considered a weak member of his warrior race, he was forced to take on dangerous and demeaning mercenary work to afford his son's medical treatment, which is what led him to accept a job from the Serpoians on Earth. His personality is a contrast between his fierce, brutal fighting style and a fundamentally honorable, grateful, and somewhat awkward demeanor. He is willing to follow orders but dislikes harsh treatment, such as having his pay cut. He also has the peculiar and disarming habit of singing the ABBA song "Chiquitita" while engaged in combat, a clear reference to his son's name.
Within the story, his primary role is that of a powerful physical threat for Momo Ayase, Ken "Okarun" Takakura, and Aira Shiratori. He is a formidable brawler, relying on immense physical strength and a boxing-based fighting style. His signature technique is the Jet Punch, a devastating blow capable of demolishing buildings. When fighting with the Serpoians, he can be forcibly injected with a serum that transforms him into "Dover Demon Strong Style 24." In this enhanced state, his appearance becomes sleeker and more insect-like, and his combat abilities are multiplied 24 times for 24 minutes, nodding to a famous Japanese energy drink commercial. His true power is unleashed underwater, where the force of his punches increases tenfold, though he still cannot breathe underwater and must surface for air.
After being defeated by the protagonists, Demone di Dover is taken to the Ayase residence to recover. The kindness shown to him by his enemies—who feed him curry and tend to his wounds—moves him deeply, as it was the first time he had been treated with such compassion. In gratitude, he abandons his mission and reveals his tragic backstory. Seiko Ayase, Momo's grandmother, realizes that the alien's blood has a similar composition to cow's milk. She arranges for him to take a dairy cow back to his home planet to provide an endless, affordable supply of blood for his son's transfusions. Overwhelmed by this act of generosity, the Dover Demon swears an eternal debt of loyalty to the group.
This marks his transformation from a foe to a trusted ally. While he returns to his home planet, he eventually comes back to Earth when his world proves unsuitable for sustaining dairy farming. Disguising himself as a human named "Peny," he gets a job on a dairy farm, staying true to his promise to always be on the protagonists' side and appearing in critical moments to offer his formidable strength in battle. His development is a classic redemption arc, revealing that a seemingly monstrous enemy is actually a devoted father driven to desperate measures by circumstance.
