Description
Hon Akraptor, also known as Hon Arkraptor, is a supporting character who plays a significant role during the Workshop Battle arc. He is a Regular, a participant climbing the Tower, and a key member of a team often referred to as Team Tangsooyook. His background is marked by profound personal loss. Akraptor was once married to a woman from the 10 Great Families, one of the most powerful and influential factions within the Tower. Together, they had a daughter, but his wife's family forcibly took both his spouse and child away from him. This traumatic event became the central driving force of his life and his reason for climbing the Tower, as he sought to gain enough strength to reclaim his family and never again suffer the agony of losing a loved one.
In terms of appearance, Akraptor is a lean but muscular man with a towering presence. He has close-cropped silver hair and light-colored eyes. One of his most distinctive features is a golden earring in his right ear, which is not merely an accessory but his converted engagement ring, a tangible symbol of his lost family and marriage. His weapon of choice is as unique as his appearance: a black-and-white striped lance that can fire concentrated beams of Shinsu, the magical energy of the Tower, over long distances. This versatile weapon can also transform, opening up like an umbrella to function as a durable shield.
Akraptor’s personality undergoes a notable evolution. When first introduced during the tests on the 20th Floor, he comes across as a dangerous, chaotic, and openly hostile individual. He is cynical and pragmatic, showing a willingness to attack his own allies if it serves his survival and proposing ruthless strategies like voting the weakest members out of a test. This abrasive demeanor initially makes him more disliked by other Regulars than even Viole, a notorious member of the criminal organization FUG. However, as he becomes a permanent member of Team Tangsooyook, his character softens considerably. He matures into the voice of reason and the team's unofficial counselor. He takes on a responsible, almost paternal role, intervening to calm down volatile members like Yeon Yihwa and mediating conflicts when personal feelings threaten to disrupt the team's cooperation.
His motivations also shift dramatically. Initially, his sole purpose was to gain power to recover his biological daughter. However, upon meeting the young and vulnerable Regular Yeo Miseng, the emptiness inside him begins to fill. He transfers his unresolved paternal feelings onto her, becoming fiercely protective. His primary reason for climbing the Tower evolves from saving his lost daughter to protecting Miseng, treating her as if she were his own child.
During the Workshop Battle, Akraptor serves as a reliable combatant and a steadfast member of his team. He is selected to participate in the first round of the Plug game on the massive vessel Archimedes, where he witnesses a brainwashed and violent Miseng. He works with his teammates to subdue her and remove the mind-controlling flower from her head. Later, he is summoned by Ja Wangnan to take part in the Development Tournament. Throughout the chaotic battles on the Archimedes, Akraptor follows the intricate strategies devised by Khun Aguero Agnis, playing his part in the larger plan to rescue their friend Viole from the clutches of FUG. He is present for the final confrontations and survives the Workshop Battle, reuniting with his fellow Regulars aboard a ship afterward.
His key relationships define his role in the story. His bond with Yeo Miseng is the most significant, as he acts as her surrogate father and protector. His relationship with Ja Wangnan evolves from mutual disrespect to a grudging respect for Wangnan's empathy and leadership. He forms a strong working relationship and friendship with Kang Horyang, often teaming up with him in combat. While he initially views the powerful Viole as a monster and a tactical threat, he eventually becomes sympathetic to Viole's plight and is willing to help him, even when it means defying FUG. Akraptor also enjoys teasing the easily annoyed Prince and offers sound, if blunt, advice to the fiery and impulsive Yeon Yihwa.
As a fighter, Akraptor is dangerous and capable, though not on the level of elites like a Princess of Zahard or Viole. His primary ability lies in his skill with Shinsu, which he channels through his unique umbrella-lance. He can fire powerful, long-range Shinsu blasts that are comparable in force to some of Viole's attacks. He is also noted for his accuracy with these blasts. His weapon's shield form provides him with a strong defensive option, making him a versatile combatant who can fight at range and protect himself in close quarters. He demonstrates his competence by performing well in ranking tests and holding his own against powerful opponents, showing that he is one of the stronger members of his team.
