Description
Kanna Kamuy is a young female dragon from another world who comes to live in the human realm after being sent away from her home dimension. Her banishment was a consequence of her mischievous behavior; she had repeatedly played pranks in an effort to gain the attention and affection of her parents, who maintained a laissez-faire approach to her upbringing. This behavior escalated when she destroyed a powerful artifact known as a Dragon Jewel, leading to her exile as punishment. Upon learning that a fellow dragon named Tohru, whom she believed to be dead, was alive and living as a maid for a human woman named Kobayashi, Kanna sought her out with the initial intention of convincing Tohru to return with her to their world. However, after experiencing the kindness and understanding of Kobayashi, who offered her a home, Kanna chose to stay and became a permanent member of the household.
In the human world, Kanna typically transforms into the form of a young girl of elementary school age. Her human appearance features white-lavender hair styled into two pigtails and large blue eyes. Her usual attire is distinctive, described as a tribal-themed gothic lolita style, consisting of a white capelet with a fur collar over a pink blouse, a white frilly skirt, and pink doll shoes. In her true dragon form, she is much smaller in stature compared to other dragons, with a body covered in white feathers and bird-like wings. True to her name, which means Thunder God, her primary elemental ability is the generation and manipulation of lightning. A unique and notable ability she possesses is the power to replenish her magical energy, or mana, by transforming the tip of her tail into a plug and inserting it directly into a standard electrical outlet, absorbing electricity from the human world.
Kanna's personality is defined by a contrast between her outward demeanor and her inner emotional world. She is generally soft-spoken, quiet, and stoic, often expressing her feelings through subtle changes in her expression rather than through words. Despite being much older than she appears by human standards, she is still very young for a dragon and her behavior reflects that of a human child. She is curious about the world around her, enjoys playing games, and easily tires of routine. While her mischievous nature has lessened since coming to live with Kobayashi, she is still known to occasionally play childish pranks or use her cuteness to her advantage. She has a ravenous appetite and has been known to eat small creatures, such as insects, crabs, or fish, whole.
Throughout the series, Kanna's role is primarily that of a foster child adapting to life in a new and strange world. Her relationships form the core of her story. She views Tohru as an older sister figure, looking up to her with great respect and affection. Her relationship with Kobayashi evolves significantly; after an initial period of distrust where she accused Kobayashi of seducing Tohru, Kanna quickly became deeply attached to her. She often seeks out Kobayashi's physical affection, such as holding her hand or hugging her, and openly views the human woman as a mother. This bond is further solidified when she begins attending the local elementary school under the name Kanna Kobayashi, posing as a relative. At school, she excels in her studies and sports and forms a particularly close friendship with a classmate, Riko Saikawa. Kanna treasures this friendship, and it has been suggested that her feelings for Saikawa may be romantic in nature, as she once expressed a desire for their relationship to mirror the one between Kobayashi and Tohru.
In the film Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved, Kanna's background and motivations are further explored with the arrival of her father, Kimun Kamui. As the leader of the Chaos forces in the dragon world, he demands that Kanna either return home or surrender a powerful dragon orb containing her mana. The conflict forces Kanna to confront her feelings of being torn between her loyalty to her found family with Kobayashi and Tohru and the expectations of her biological father and her original world. Her development throughout the series and film centers on her transition from a lonely child who acted out for attention to a cherished member of a new family, all while learning to bridge the gap between her nature as a dragon and her life as a human girl.
