Description
Azad is a character from the Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid manga series, specifically introduced as a primary antagonist in the storyline that also serves as the foundation for the anime film A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved. He is a mage, not a dragon, originating from the same other world as Tohru and her kind. Physically, Azad appears as a handsome young man with blonde hair and sharp eyes, often dressed in a distinctive black holy cloak. His age is approximately 25.

Azad possesses a cold, calm, and calculating personality, able to keep his composure while executing complex plans. However, this stoic exterior masks a deep-seated and violent rage that surfaces when confronting dragons, causing his speech to become more aggressive. This hatred is the core of his being. His village and family, including a beloved younger sister, were destroyed in a dragon attack, an event that left him deeply traumatized and fueled a singular goal: to kill all dragons. Despite his animosity, Azad demonstrates a sharp intellect and a thorough understanding of dragon psychology, which he uses to manipulate them. At the same time, he harbors a complex and bitter resentment when observing dragons like Tohru and Kanna finding peaceful co-existence with humans, a fate denied to his own family.

In the story, Azad serves as a manipulative and formidable antagonist. Initially, he works as a double agent, pretending to serve the chaos dragon Kimun Kamui while secretly instigating conflict between dragon factions to weaken and destroy them. His master plan centers on exploiting Kanna Kamui, using her desire for parental love to manipulate her into extracting a powerful dragon stone. With this stone, Azad gains the ability to control other dragons, showcasing his primary motivation is annihilation, not power. He is a threat that requires the combined effort of multiple main characters to stop.

His key relationships are defined by this conflict. He views Kanna as a tool to be used and discarded. He is consistently baffled by the human Kobayashi, whose cleverness and influence over dragons repeatedly disrupt his schemes. His final confrontation is with Tohru, who defeats him. Following his defeat, Azad undergoes a significant development. Stripped of his magic and unable to continue his crusade, he is assigned a new role as a guardian, supervising other other-worldly beings who come to the human realm. In this new life, he takes the alias Ken Asado and forms an unexpected partnership with a human named Georgie Saikawa, becoming something akin to a butler or partner to her. This relationship gradually introduces him to a more peaceful existence, though his underlying disdain for dragons remains.

As a mage, Azad's notable abilities include teleportation and proficiency with equipment designed to kill dragons, such as a holy sword and a cloak woven from holy water. His most dangerous power, however, is his strategic mind and his ability to use a dragon stone to magically control any dragon whose magical properties he understands.
