Description
Darkness, whose true name is Lalatina Ford Dustiness, is an eighteen-year-old crusader and a member of Kazuma Satou's dysfunctional adventuring party. Physically, she is a striking young woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a tall, voluptuous figure that presents an initial impression of an elegant and composed noble lady. However, this stoic and dignified appearance is dramatically undercut by her true personality. Despite her beauty and noble bearing, Darkness is a profound and enthusiastic masochist, a fact that defines most of her actions and interactions. She derives intense pleasure from physical pain, verbal abuse, rejection, and the prospect of being defeated or humiliated in battle. This extends to vivid fantasies of being tormented by monsters or even the Devil King himself, and she often becomes flushed with excitement from a harsh scolding from Kazuma.

Her motivations are a complex blend of genuine altruism and her distorted desires. While she does possess a courageous and caring heart, never hesitating to put herself in harm's way to protect her friends or innocent people, her heroic acts are frequently fueled by her masochistic cravings. She consciously seeks out situations where she can be struck, battered, and overwhelmed, savoring the feeling of a valiant struggle before an inevitable defeat. This unique drive leads her to perform daring feats of endurance, often to the bewilderment of onlookers who mistake her for a selfless martyr.

In the story, Darkness serves as the party's primary tank. Her role is to absorb enemy attacks and shield her more vulnerable companions, a task she performs with unnerving enthusiasm. Her relationships with the other party members are central to the narrative. She and Kazuma share a complicated bond; he is initially drawn to her physical appearance but constantly exasperated by her personality, and he often insults her, which she, in turn, enjoys. Despite this, a mutual affection develops between them, and Kazuma has proven he genuinely cares for her by rescuing her from an unwanted arranged marriage, an event that deepens her romantic feelings for him. She gets along well with the goddess Aqua, often providing her with support, and has a companionable relationship with the archwizard Megumin, though the two later become friendly rivals for Kazuma's attention. Her friendship with the thief Chris is particularly significant; following a childhood prayer to the goddess Eris for a friend, she met Chris, and they became best friends and adventuring partners. As a member of the noble Dustiness family, she also has a sisterly relationship with Princess Iris and is protective of her cousin Sylphina.

While her masochism is a constant source of humor and complications, Darkness shows notable development. She becomes more open about her desires as the series progresses, but also displays genuine anger and seriousness when her friends are threatened, such as when she confronted the demon Beldia after he killed other adventurers. Her internal conflict is highlighted by her extreme embarrassment regarding her elegant real name, Lalatina, which is one of the few forms of humiliation she does not appreciate.

Notably, her abilities are as extreme and paradoxical as her personality. As a crusader, she possesses phenomenal defensive power, having allocated all her skill points to defensive skills and physical and magical resistance. She has survived direct hits from Megumin's world-shattering Explosion magic and powerful attacks from the demon Vanir, feats that are virtually unheard of. Her physical strength is immense, and she has a skill to attract enemy attacks to herself. Conversely, her offensive capability is virtually zero due to her abysmal accuracy; she is so clumsy she cannot hit a stationary target, and she refuses to learn any skills that would improve her aim, as her masochism craves the struggle of being unable to fight back effectively.
