Description
Granbell Rozzo is a pivotal figure in the world of "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime," serving as a major antagonist whose actions are driven by centuries of experience and a deeply personal tragedy. He is the former head of the Rozzo family, the ruling house of the Kingdom of Siltrozzo, and holds the influential position as the leader of the Five Elders, the body that controls the Council of the West. His age exceeds two thousand years, making him one of the oldest and most experienced characters in the series. In his youth, he was known as the Hero of Light, a legendary warrior who fought for a millennium to protect human territories from various threats. In the present day of the story, he is typically seen as a withered old man with white hair and violet eyes, but during his prime, he possessed shining blond hair. He also operates under the alias Gran, the leader of the Clerics of the Seven Luminaries within the Western Holy Church.

The personality of Granbell Rozzo is complex, shaped by the immense burden of his long life and profound loss. Originally, he was a benevolent and altruistic individual genuinely dedicated to the protection of human civilization. However, his perspective hardened over the centuries, evolving into a stubborn belief that absolute control over humanity is the only reliable method to ensure its safety, a goal he pursued by even manipulating the Western Holy Church for political ends. This pragmatic and often ruthless approach made him quick to eliminate any rising talent or nation, such as the Jura Tempest Federation led by Rimuru Tempest, which he perceived as a direct threat to his vision of human-dominated order. The driving motivation behind his later, more extreme actions is grief. The death of his beloved wife, Maria, who was a great pillar of support for him, plunged him into madness and obsession. Consequently, he became consumed by the idea of creating a world controlled by the Rozzo family, seeing his exceptionally gifted granddaughter, Mariabell Rozzo, as the vessel for the family's future hope and his successor in this grand scheme.

In the story, Granbell acts as a primary instigator of conflict from behind the scenes. He accepts and acts upon Mariabell's intention to use economic control to dominate human society, plotting to eliminate both Rimuru and the increasingly powerful Hinata Sakaguchi. To this end, he collaborates with other antagonistic figures like Yuuki Kagurazaka and Damrada, orchestrating a conspiracy to strike down the rising power of Tempest. However, his plans are thwarted by the intervention of Luminous Valentine, the Demon Lord he had served under and with whom he had formed a working alliance after their ancient clashes. Her interference costs him his political authority and, more devastatingly, his successor Mariabell, leaving him despairing over the future of his family and legacy. Exhausted by his ancient role, he makes a final, desperate gamble during a period of social chaos. Using stored energy, he restores himself to his physical prime and attempts to have Yuuki revive Chronoa to help him defeat Luminous Valentine in battle. In this final confrontation, he awakens to his ultimate ability but is ultimately defeated by Luminous.

His key relationships are central to his character arc. His most significant bond is with his deceased wife Maria, whose death catalyzed his descent into madness. His granddaughter Mariabell is the primary inheritor of his ambitions, representing his hope for the future. He is also a mentor to the formidable holy knight Hinata Sakaguchi, having taught her and shaped her into a major power in the West, which creates a complex dynamic when they find themselves on opposing sides. His relationship with Luminous Valentine is multifaceted, beginning as a bitter rivalry that eventually transforms into a mutual understanding and a working alliance where he became her subordinate to establish the Seven Luminaries. He shared a profound friendship with Razul, who entrusted his spiritual strength to Granbell upon his death.

Granbell undergoes a notable development, particularly in his final moments. He is a tragic figure whose thousand-year struggle to protect humanity corrupted his original altruism into a desire for absolute control. At the end of his life, after being defeated, his sound mind, which had been unraveling since Maria’s death, is finally restored. He finds a measure of peace and redemption, passing away while holding onto hope in Luminous Valentine's care. His legacy continues after his death; during the Great War of Demons, he is temporarily summoned in his prime form by Masayuki Honjou through the power of Rudra. On this occasion, he appears before his disciple Hinata and reconciles with Damrada, restoring the amicable relationship they had when they all served under the ancient Emperor Rudra. In terms of abilities, Granbell possesses the Unique Skill "Indomitable" (Akiramenumono). During his final battle with Luminous, the souls of his beloved Maria and his friend Razul sublimate, causing his power to evolve into an angelic Ultimate Ability named "King of Hope" (Sariel), which governs the cycle of life and reincarnation. In his final act, he entrusted this powerful ability to Chronoa, the guardian of the world.
