Description
Gard Mjöllmile is a prominent character who begins as a well-known merchant from the Blumund Kingdom. He is a middle-aged man of forty four with a height of 165 centimeters, and his appearance is often described as looking suspicious or mysterious at first glance, dressed in typical merchant attire. Originally based in the royal capital of Blumund, he was the head of the main shopping street and also controlled the local underworld, even giving himself the title of Don or the emperor of the underworld.

Despite his origins in organized crime and high-interest lending, his personality is defined by a striking contrast between his shrewd, calculating exterior and a deeply kind and altruistic heart. He is known for his sharp mind and excellent business instincts, capable of navigating both legitimate markets and the darker side of commerce. However, his defining trait is his willingness to risk his own life to protect others. He prioritizes the safety of women and children and helps injured people even when his own life is in danger, a trait that ultimately leads to his first direct encounter with Rimuru. He operates on a principle of mutual benefit, respecting contracts and fair dealings whether his partner is a human or a monster, which makes him an exceptionally reliable figure. He also possesses a more lighthearted side, being an outspoken and enthusiastic fan of the hero Honjou Masayuki.

His motivation is not purely for self-enrichment. While he is driven by business success, his actions show a strong sense of responsibility and a desire to create orderly and prosperous systems. He is motivated by long-term partnerships and stability rather than short-term, cutthroat profits. His decision to eventually relocate his entire base of operations to the monster country of Tempest demonstrates his forward-thinking vision and his trust in Rimuru as a partner and friend.

Gard's role in the story evolves significantly. He first gets involved with Rimuru through an introduction by Fuze to negotiate the sale of healing potions. Recognizing the immense value of the product, he becomes Rimuru's business partner, which opens up many new commercial avenues. A pivotal moment occurs when a Sky Dragon attacks the capital. Gard nearly dies in the chaos but is saved by Rimuru, which forges a deep bond of trust between them. Following this, during the Founding Festival of the Jura Tempest Federation, Rimuru invites him to move to the nation. Gard accepts and becomes the first human chief officer and the first civil official in the monster country, taking on the critical roles of head of the Finance Department and Public Relations. In this capacity, he is instrumental in the country's growth, organizing festivals, managing national finances, and representing Tempest in international trade. He also works in the shadows, forming the "Three Tricksters" with Rimuru and Elmesia El Ru Sarion and becoming a leader of the secret society "The Three Wise Drunks" (Riega), which aims to unify the underworld. He also serves as a representative for the Four Nations Trade Federation.

His key relationships center on Rimuru Tempest, who is both his savior and his most trusted partner. This friendship extends to other leaders like Rigurd, with whom he quickly becomes close. He also maintains a close working relationship with Elmesia El Ru Sarion. While there was initial concern among the monsters about having a human in a high-ranking position, Gard's competence and skill at winning people over quickly made him a respected and valuable member of the federation.

Gard's development is a story of a local, albeit powerful, underworld figure who rises to become a major international economic and political player. He begins as a successful but regionally focused merchant and leader of a kingdom's dark side. By leveraging his partnership with Rimuru, he transitions from the private sector to a high-level government position in a new nation. He broadens his influence from the single kingdom of Blumund to the entire Western Nations, using his unique skill set to shape both the legitimate economy and the secret networks that keep it balanced.

In terms of abilities, Gard Mjöllmile possesses no special magic or combat skills. Instead, his strengths are purely mundane but highly refined. He is a genius at financial management, negotiation, and strategy. His exceptional persuasive ability and keen understanding of human psychology allow him to manage people effectively and defuse tense situations. This skill in managing relationships and crises, along with his sharp wit in recognizing business opportunities, makes him an invaluable asset to Rimuru and the Jura Tempest Federation.
