Description
Mariabell Rosso is the princess of the Kingdom of Siltrosso, a small nation within the Western alliance, and a central antagonist in the later story arcs. She is a reincarnated otherworlder, specifically the second reincarnation of Maria Rosso, the deceased wife of her grandfather Granbell Rosso. In her first life after her death as Maria, she lived in a parallel world where she became a powerful financial ruler who controlled all of Europe behind the scenes, using war as a tool and manipulating economies at will. Upon her death in that world, she was reborn as Mariabell, retaining all memories from both of her previous lives. Despite appearing as a girl not yet ten years old, she possesses the mind and experience of a seasoned global strategist.
Her personality is defined by an immense, insatiable greed and a cold, rational approach to decision-making. She is calculating, scheming, and entirely self-centered, famously remarking that she does not care if humanity or the world disappears as long as her desires are fulfilled. Her overconfidence and arrogance stem from the fact that her unique ability allowed her to control nearly everyone around her from birth, leading her to believe she is untouchable. This arrogance is her greatest flaw, as she consistently underestimates opponents whose ambitions or powers exceed her own.
Mariabell’s primary motivation is the absolute domination of the world through economic control and political manipulation, an ambition she shares with her grandfather, Granbell Rosso. She views the nation of Tempest and its leader, Rimuru Tempest, as the greatest obstacle to this goal, because Rimuru promotes coexistence between humans and monsters, which would undermine the Rosso family’s plan to rule humanity under a single authority. Her role in the story is that of a mastermind villain who operates through influence and subterfuge rather than direct combat, targeting Tempest’s economy and attempting to destabilize it from within. She attends the Founder Festival in Tempest to study its weaknesses and orchestrates a scheme involving Duke Muese to create a currency crisis, though this plan is foiled by Empress Elmesia of Thalion.
Key relationships define her arc. Granbell Rosso is the one person she cannot control because his ambitions are greater than her own, making her Greed skill ineffective against him. Nevertheless, he trusts her deeply and sees her as the hope of the Rosso family. Yuuki Kagurazaka is another figure she underestimates; she believes she has made him a puppet, but his own greed and ambition are stronger than hers, and he secretly plays both sides. Her relationship with Rimuru Tempest is adversarial, as she attempts to use her Unique Skill Greed to rewrite his soul, only to fail because his Ultimate Skill Raphael protects him from mental interference.
Mariabell’s notable ability is her Unique Skill Greed, classified as a Deadly Sin-type skill. This skill allows her to perceive the desires and ambitions of others and then manipulate, amplify, or overwrite those desires to turn people into her willing puppets. The stronger the target’s greed, the easier they are to control, but the skill fails against anyone whose ambition surpasses her own or who wields an Ultimate Skill. Greed also possesses a lethal ability called Long for Death, which can turn a person’s will to live into a wish to die. Beyond her supernatural skill, her true strength lies in her financial genius and deep understanding of economics, supply chains, and political leverage, which she uses to control nations without raising an army.
Her development in the story is largely static until her downfall. She grows more confident as her schemes progress, but she never learns humility. Her defeat comes when she directly confronts Rimuru in the ancient ruins of Amrita; her attempt to overwrite his soul is nullified by Raphael, and she is physically subdued. As she flees, Yuuki Kagurazaka intercepts her, reveals that his greed is greater than hers, and kills her, stealing Greed for himself. Her death triggers Granbell Rosso’s descent into madness and ultimately his own sacrifice, escalating the larger conflicts of the following volumes. Mariabell Rosso stands out as a human villain who relies on intellect, economic warfare, and psychological control rather than raw power, making her one of the most calculating and dangerous antagonists in the series.
