Description
Chihiro Kobayashi is a secondary character and a close friend of Anna Yamada. She is a student in the same class as Kyotaro Ichikawa, beginning in class 2-3 and later moving to class 3-1. Compared to her peers, Chihiro has a notably small and childlike stature, standing at 141 cm tall. She has a pale complexion, short brown hair styled in a bowl cut, and warm brown eyes. Her typical school attire consists of a white, short-sleeved, collared blouse with a red ribbon tie, a blue high-waist pleated skirt, white knee-length socks, and brown loafers.
Chihiro has a friendly and energetic personality, though she often displays a childish demeanor. Despite her youthful appearance, she frequently takes on a responsible role, acting as a grounded counterpart to Anna's more carefree and whimsical behavior. She is known for her direct honesty, regularly calling out her friends when they avoid responsibilities or act foolishly. Her caring and protective nature towards Anna is so consistent that Kyotaro privately refers to her as Annas boyfriend. While she is typically the one to keep others in line, Chihiro herself can be quite absent-minded, naive, and prone to making blunders. This naivety is most apparent in matters of romance, as she remains largely oblivious to the romantic tension and developing relationship between Anna and Kyotaro, often being the last to notice the obvious signs.
Chihiros primary motivation is her loyalty and dedication to her friends, especially Anna. She takes her role as a confidant and protector very seriously, managing situations that could overwhelm her friend. She acts almost like a manager at school, cutting off approaching boys and reminding Anna of her responsibilities. Her background reveals that she comes from a family that includes her parents, a grandmother, and two younger brothers. She attended the same elementary school as Kyotaro, Moeko Sekine, and Yurine Hanzawa, though she met Anna later upon entering middle school.
The core of her role in the story is her friendship with Anna Yamada. They became close while both were members of the basketball club during their first year, a bond that continued even after Anna left the team. Their friendship is physical and comfortable, with the much taller Anna often using Chihiro as a lap rest or carrying her easily. Chihiro has a habit of spreading information about Anna and Kyotaro unknowingly, which often leads to awkward or comedic moments. Within the larger friend group, she is affectionately called Chii by Anna and Bayashiko by Moeko Sekine.
Throughout the story, Chihiro develops very little in terms of her romantic awareness, maintaining her oblivious nature for a significant period. However, she does gradually become closer friends with Kyotaro, moving from formal address to a more casual first-name basis. Her character consistently demonstrates a notable athletic ability. Despite her small height, she is a passionate and talented member of the basketball club, capable of scoring many points and even making three-point shots. In a notable contradiction to her usual caretaker role, Kyotaro has observed that Chihiro is weak with matters of the opposite sex and can be flustered by them. She also suffers from allergies that restrict her diet, preventing her from eating certain snacks and foods.
