Description
Chizuko Chūzenji is the wife of Akihiko Chūzenji, the proprietor of a second-hand bookstore and a man deeply involved in solving cases related to mononoke. Her background is rooted in tradition and commerce, as she was born into a family that runs a long-established Japanese confectionery shop called Kyogokudō in Kyoto. It is from her family's shop that her husband borrowed the name for his own bookstore, a fact often done without her family's prior permission. She married Akihiko shortly after his graduation from university and, even after marriage, frequently returns to her family home in Kyoto to assist with the confectionery business.

In terms of personality, Chizuko presents a calm and gentle demeanor, carrying herself with a polite and ladylike grace that is complemented by her fair skin and large eyes, which give her a Western-style beauty. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a remarkably sharp and logical mind. When the situation calls for it, her tongue becomes exceptionally犀利, and she possesses a keen wit that few can match. Her most defining personal trait is her ability to verbally best her husband, Akihiko, who is himself renowned for his formidable debating skills and eloquence. She is often described as the only person capable of out-talking him, and she does so with a mix of humor and affectionate teasing, referring to him with playful insults like a stone statue with a grumpy face or an abnormal person who does nonsensical things.

Her motivations are deeply tied to her roles as a wife, a daughter, and a manager of her domestic sphere. She ensures the smooth running of her household, which frequently becomes a gathering place for a variety of eccentric and unusual guests connected to her husband's work. This requires her to be perpetually busy but always in control, skillfully determining the right moments to serve tea and refreshments. Her role in the story is primarily as a grounding presence and a source of stability and sharp insight within the main character's life. Beyond managing the home, her key relationships are central to her character. She shares a particularly strong friendship with Yukie Sekiguchi, the wife of Akihiko's acquaintance Tatsumi Sekiguchi, and the two women often spend time together on outings.

Chizuko demonstrates personal development through the cultivation of a new hobby. While she professes little knowledge about antiques in general, she possesses a genuine love for ceramics. After becoming involved in the Bincho incident, her interest deepened to the point where she began to actively practice pottery herself, turning it into a fulfilling personal pursuit. Her notable abilities are twofold: first, her sharp and persuasive eloquence, which acts as a unique counterbalance to her husband's intellect; and second, her practical skill in managing a chaotic household and masterfully timing the service of tea to an unpredictable stream of visitors.
