Description
Purson Soi is the thirteenth member of the Misfit Class at Babyls Demon School, the same class as the protagonist Iruma Suzuki. He is a tall, slender demon with white hair cut in a bowl style, a pair of small black horns, and pointed ears, and he is typically described as being slightly shorter than Iruma. For much of his time at the school, he is present in the classroom and at events but goes almost entirely unnoticed by his classmates, making him something of a ghost within his own class.
Soi comes from the Purson family, a clan known throughout the demon world as the ultimate lone wolves. The family's creed is to absolutely avoid standing out, to remain silent, unseen, and hidden, and they have served the demon world for generations through covert operations and clandestine missions while publicly dealing in detection-warding and anti-recognition tools. Soi is the second son of the family. His older brother, Purson Purton, was a prodigy in the family's abilities but disappeared without a trace, which led his father to place even greater expectations on Soi to uphold the family tradition. Raised under these strict rules, Soi was not permitted to draw attention to himself, to speak freely with others, or to voice his own opinions, leaving him isolated outside of his immediate family from a very young age.
Soi's defining trait is his family bloodline ability, known as Detection Warding or anti-recognition magic. This power does not simply make him invisible in the ordinary sense; it suppresses the ability of others to consciously perceive him. People can look directly at him and still fail to register his existence, and even after interacting with him they tend to forget that he was ever there. This effect is so complete that for much of the first year his classmates did not realize he was a member of the Misfit Class at all. As his mastery grows, the ability evolves into more advanced forms, allowing him to transform into an intangible mist, pass through solid objects, dampen all sound around him, and eventually blend almost fully into his environment through a technique called One With The World. He can also extend his concealment to other people, hiding an entire group alongside himself.
In outward appearance and daily behavior, Soi is quiet, expressionless, and somewhat gloomy, with a face that often looks blank or bored and a tendency to tilt his head to one side. In truth, he is a sophisticated and articulate person with a wide vocabulary and a sharp eye for observation. Because he rarely had the chance to converse with anyone outside his family, he became accustomed to talking to himself, and when he finally finds someone he can speak with comfortably, he tends to talk endlessly, even overwhelming others with his words. He has also spent his time quietly watching his classmates and knows many small details about them, including their habits and weaknesses.
Soi's deepest motivation is the internal conflict between the family rule that he must never be noticed and his own desire to be seen, acknowledged, and heard. As a child, his mother gave him a trumpet and told him that whenever words became too much to hold in, he could pour them into his playing instead of speaking. This forces the class to finally locate and confront its hidden thirteenth member. Soi is initially unable to cooperate because of anxiety and the weight of his family's teachings, but his classmates, especially Iruma, persist in reaching out to him. Iruma is one of the few people who genuinely noticed and remembered Soi from the beginning, and his recognition and acceptance become the catalyst for Soi's breakthrough. During the festival, Soi performs with his trumpet, finally stepping into the spotlight he had spent his life avoiding, and his contribution helps the class win with a perfect score and receive special commendation. His rank rises from 2 to 4 as a result.
