Description
Hironobu Makita is a second-year student at Hyoga High School, a school with a strong baseball program in West Tokyo. Before entering high school, he was a member of the Fujimi Senior Little League team, where he was a teammate of Shunpei Chihaya. Physically, Makita is notably tall, standing at 192 centimeters, with short, spiky black hair. He throws and bats right-handed, wears jersey number ten, and uses a glove made by Asics.
Makita possesses a straightforward, simple-minded, and highly energetic personality. He tends to act without overthinking, puts maximum effort into every action, and is known to forget things quickly. His literal way of thinking and strong, muscular build have led his senior, Shuto Kirishima, to give him the nickname "gorilla." He sometimes brags or shows off, but he does so without any harmful intent and often takes what others say at face value.
In baseball, Makita is a powerful right-handed pitcher, though he also plays right field and is a formidable batter, batting cleanup in his second year after hitting fifth as a first-year. His primary weapon on the mound is a blazing fastball, which he relies on heavily, preferring to overpower hitters with speed and strength. He possesses outstanding stamina, allowing him to throw many pitches without losing velocity. After being hit hard in a practice game against Teitoku High School, he recognized the need for more than just a fastball and worked to develop a forkball, which he calls the "Makita Rock Ball," to add variety to his pitching.
Makita shares a significant history with Shunpei Chihaya, his former teammate from their Fujimi Senior days. He views Chihaya as his main rival, respecting his skills as a player while openly criticizing what he sees as Chihaya's "small tricks" and strategic style. Their interactions are shaped by the clash between Makita's direct, power-focused thinking and Chihaya's more clever and subtle approach. This rivalry is a key driver for Makita, pushing him to compete and improve. His relationship with Kirishima is largely defined by the senior teasing him, which Makita typically brushes off or quickly forgets. Throughout the story, Makita evolves from a pitcher who relies solely on his fastball to one who is learning to become more versatile, demonstrating a deep commitment to baseball and a persistent dedication to training and giving his all in every game.
