Description
Hathaway Noa, son of Bright Noa and Mirai Yashima, was born in UC 0080. During Char's Rebellion, he accidentally killed Quess Paraya while trying to save Amuro Ray from her mobile armor. This event traumatized him and burdened him with guilt, compounded when the Federation hailed him as a hero for the act.
After the Second Neo Zeon War, Hathaway studied botany. His researcher status granted him special travel privileges between Earth and space. Witnessing the Earth Federation's escalating corruption—including "Man Hunter" units forcibly deporting civilians to space colonies for slave labor while elites flouted immigration laws—fueled his disillusionment. He was recruited by the anti-Federation terrorist group Mafty, led by the pseudonymous Quack Salver, a high-ranking Federation official. Adopting the alias Mafty Navue Erin, Hathaway became Mafty's leader, dedicated to assassinating corrupt officials and purging the Federation's abuses.
Leveraging his public identity as a botanical researcher, Hathaway covertly advanced Mafty's goals. He tested and later commandeered Anaheim Electronics' RX-105 Ξ Gundam (Xi Gundam) for attacks against Federation targets. His tactics combined strategic precision with a reluctance for unnecessary collateral damage, though he authorized high-profile assaults like the bombing of a cabinet meeting hall in Adelaide. He maintained a complex relationship with Federation officer Kenneth Sleg, who pursued Mafty while privately acknowledging shared ideals with Hathaway.
Haunted by Quess's death and influenced by Char Aznable's philosophy, Hathaway believed humanity must abandon Earth for its ecological recovery. His resolve was tempered by internal conflicts: an inability to reconcile his ideals with the public's short-term thinking and estrangement from his girlfriend, Kelia Dace, who grew distant as he immersed himself in Mafty. He also encountered Gigi Andalucia, whose perceptiveness threatened his cover and whose presence evoked parallels to Quess.
Hathaway's rebellion culminated in a failed assault on Adelaide Airport, where beam barriers disabled his Xi Gundam. Captured and sentenced to death without trial, he was executed by firing squad. Federation officials orchestrated the squad to be led by his father, Bright Noa, though Kenneth Sleg attempted to conceal Hathaway's identity beforehand. The Federation publicly revealed Hathaway's role in Mafty post-execution to discredit him, but this instead martyred him, galvanizing dissent against the regime.
His legacy persisted as a symbol of resistance against Federation corruption. The aftermath for the Noa family remains undocumented in available sources. Bright Noa later attempted to resign from the military, enter civilian life, and contemplated politics but ultimately prioritized family stability.
