Description
Aldebaran, almost universally called Al, is a mysterious and battle-scarred figure who serves as the knight and caretaker to Priscilla Barielle, one of the candidates for the Dragonfriend throne. His origins mirror those of the protagonist, Subaru Natsuki, as he was summoned to the world of Re:ZERO from Japan approximately eighteen years before the main story begins. Unlike Subaru, who arrived in the Kingdom of Lugunica, Al was transported to the hostile southern nation of the Vollachian Empire. This cruel beginning forced him into a life of brutal survival, becoming a gladiator slave on the island of Ginunhive, where he was forced to fight for nearly a decade. During this time, he suffered horrific injuries, losing his left arm from the forearm down and receiving a vast assortment of scars across his face and body that left him disfigured.

Al presents a striking and contradictory image. He stands at about five feet and eight inches tall, with a stocky, muscular frame that speaks to his violent past. His attire is a mismatched combination of refined and shabby elements, consisting of sand-colored trousers, an open green vest, and a worn yellow mantle. The most prominent piece of his outfit is a sophisticated, pitch-black helmet adorned with a red plume, which he wears at all times to conceal his scarred face, as he feels he could not have normal conversations without it. Under the helmet, he has long black hair tied in a ponytail and black eyes that give the impression of sanpaku, where the whites are visible around the iris. His missing left arm is covered by a bandaged stub, a constant reminder of his past. His overall look is shabby and lowlife, intentionally contrasting with the radiance and opulence of his mistress, Priscilla.

Personality-wise, Al is a study in contrasts. He typically presents a frivolous, goofy, and light-hearted demeanor that makes him easy to get along with. He speaks pleasantly, is not quick to anger, and shares an instant kinship with Subaru, whom he calls brother, due to their shared origins and experiences. This casual attitude extends to his role as a knight; he does not see himself as one, harboring a deep hatred for knights in general. Instead, he views himself as Priscilla's caretaker, handyman, and jester, a dynamic to which he has no qualms. However, beneath this easygoing surface lies a much darker air. He holds immense rage towards those who wrong the people he cares about and shows no hesitation in bringing death to his enemies. He is also deeply affected by a form of amnesia, which sometimes causes him to feel as if he is losing his grip on reality when recalling memories from his original world. He demonstrates insecurity about his appearance and, despite his relaxed nature, is excessively calculative and patient when forced into a fight, preferring to outwit opponents rather than meet them head-on.

Al's motivations are largely centered on loyalty and a mysterious personal mission. He is fiercely, if unconventionally, loyal to Priscilla, having stayed by her side through numerous political upheavals and changes in fortune. A significant part of his motivation seems tied to his past and the secrets he carries. He is haunted by memories associated with silver hair, which he associates with a profound personal failure and a sense of being useless. He also speaks of a sensei, implying he had a teacher or mentor whose approval he seeks. Al is described by the series author as being involved in one of the three great mysteries of the story, implying that revealing his full circumstances and true goals would answer many core questions. In later arcs, after a transformation that regresses his body to that of a child, his actions become more enigmatic and directly antagonistic, suggesting his primary allegiance may ultimately be to a personal goal rather than to Priscilla alone.

In the story, Al serves multiple roles. Initially, he is a supporting character who acts as an introduction to the Priscilla camp, often providing comic relief and casual advice. However, as the narrative progresses, his role expands significantly. He becomes a main supporting character in later arcs, acting as a guide and reluctant ally to Subaru. His deep knowledge of the Vollachian Empire and its customs proves invaluable. He also has a functional role in combat, using his unique abilities to turn the tide in otherwise unwinnable situations. His primary relationship is with Priscilla Barielle, to whom he has shown a deep, perhaps romantic, devotion that he eventually confesses. Despite her often treating him with contempt, he remains a steadfast and protective presence. His most significant relationship is with Subaru Natsuki. Al is the first person to immediately recognize Subaru as a fellow otherworlder, forming an instant bond. He acts as a senpai figure, offering understanding and camaraderie that few others can provide. He also has a strange, tense history with the oni twins, Ram and Rem. Rem notes a dark aura around him, while Ram seems to share an unknown past with him that he is displeased to recall. He also appears to have past connections to the Witch Cult, claiming to know a different Sin Archbishop than the ones encountered in the main story.

Development-wise, Al undergoes a shift from a mysterious, humorous side-character to a central, potentially antagonistic figure. While his core personality traits of being goofy and calculative remain, the narrative peels back layers of his trauma, guilt, and desperate determination. His past as a gladiator and the specifics of his amnesia are gradually hinted at, painting a picture of a man who has suffered enormously and adapted by becoming a master of survival. His most dramatic development occurs when his body regresses to a child-like form, though his mind and personality remain intact. In more recent story developments, following a great tragedy, Al ultimately betrays Subaru's group, revealing that his ultimate goal is to eliminate Subaru from the world, fully embracing his role as the following star rather than the sun he served.

Al possesses a set of notable abilities that make him a formidable and unique fighter. His most powerful and mysterious asset is an unnamed Authority he possesses, which functions similarly to Subaru's Return by Death but with critical differences. This ability creates a spatial territory. When activated, any death within this territory causes time to reset to a previous point. The ability functions like a coin flip. If Al is the victim, he retains the memories of each loop, learning and adapting until he finds a path to victory, able to die repeatedly with no apparent limit. If he is the subjugator, his opponent retains all memories of the loops while he remembers nothing. This creates a nightmarish scenario for the enemy, who is trapped in a cycle of killing Al only for time to reset, driving them insane from Al's perspective. Beyond this authority, Al is a capable magic user who specializes in Earth Magic, able to cast defensive walls with Dona. He is also a highly skilled, if second-rate, swordsman who wields a weapon called the Blue Dragon Sword. His greatest asset in combat, however, is not raw power but his immense experience, patience, and calculative mind, honed by a decade of gladiatorial combat. He claims the only way he can fight is by outwitting people and catching them by surprise, a strategy his looping ability makes devastatingly effective.
