Description
Nowa Sugaya is a supporting character in the anime and manga series My Dress-Up Darling. She is a classmate and close friend of the main protagonist, Marin Kitagawa. Nowa is a high school girl who is notably shorter than Marin and has a distinctive appearance: she has black hair tied into twin pigtails with parallel red streaks running through the sides and the inward parts of the pigtails. Her eyes are black, she wears piercings in both ears, often has black painted nails, and is frequently seen with a lollipop in her mouth. Her style is trendy and fashionable, fitting her energetic and social nature.

Nowa has an easygoing, highly social, and quick-witted personality. She demonstrates excellent improvisational skills and a strong sense of timing, which allows her to smoothly navigate conversations and social situations. She quickly grasps Wakana Gojo's overly serious way of thinking and knows how to respond without making things awkward. She is lighthearted, nonjudgmental, and open-minded, showing no judgment toward Gojo's unusual hobby of making hina dolls, instead recognizing that the world is vast and not simply black and white. She becomes fast friends with Gojo and even uses silly voices when greeting him to try to make him laugh, which is effective. She is also known for her love of karaoke and her energetic presence among her friend group.

As a supporting character, Nowa's role in the story is primarily to reflect Marin's social life outside of cosplay and to provide a grounding presence in the school setting. She is part of Marin's circle of friends and appears in various school scenes, often chatting during class breaks, lunch periods, or when the group goes out together. While she remains unaware of Marin's full involvement in cosplay and her partnership with Gojo in creating costumes, she is not ignorant or gossipy. She accepts Marin's quirks with ease, which highlights Marin's ability to balance her popularity with her more private passions. Her interactions help illustrate Marin's dual identity as both a popular girl and a passionate otaku, without any sense of conflict between those worlds.

Nowa's key relationships are with Marin Kitagawa and Wakana Gojo. She is one of Marin's closest school friends, and the two share a playful and close bond. Nowa does not hesitate to call Marin out in a teasing manner, such as when she asks if Marin and Gojo are going out together, to which Marin nonchalantly responds that it was summer. This dynamic shows a comfortable and trusting friendship. With Gojo, Nowa becomes friendly and welcoming, accepting him into their social circle without prejudice. She is also acquainted with another friend named Rune, though their interactions are limited.

In terms of development, Nowa remains a consistent presence throughout the story. Her character does not undergo a significant transformation, as her role is to be a stable, supportive friend who embodies a nonjudgmental attitude. She represents the idea that being fashionable and socially outgoing does not have to conflict with having niche or unconventional interests. Her ability to accept others without needing to know every detail about their lives reinforces the series' broader themes of individuality and social acceptance.

Nowa's notable abilities are social and interpersonal rather than technical. She has a natural talent for reading social cues, making others feel at ease, and defusing potentially awkward moments with humor and timing. She also has an energetic and entertaining presence, whether through her love of karaoke or her playful teasing. These qualities make her an effective and supportive friend within the story's school setting.
