TV-Series
Description
Amate Yuzuriha, who goes by the nickname Machu, is the 17-year-old protagonist of the series. She lives in the Izuma Colony on Side 6 with her mother, Tamaki, while her father, a diplomat, works on a different colony. Despite attending a prestigious girls' school and leading a peaceful, comfortable life, she feels a persistent sense that her daily existence is somehow fake or unreal. This feeling of being trapped in an artificial environment fuels a deep, unfulfilled longing to visit Earth.
Machu is characterized by a bold, proactive, and impulsive personality. She is decisive and quick-thinking, often taking the initiative in dangerous situations, but this decisiveness can border on recklessness, leading her into trouble as quickly as it gets her out of it. She has a natural distrust of authority and the adults in her life, which creates significant friction with her image-conscious mother, who is concerned about how her daughter's lack of ambition reflects on her own career. Her restless spirit and search for authenticity are what ultimately drive her actions.
Her motivation shifts from a vague dissatisfaction with her life to a more focused goal after she is drawn into the world of Clan Battle, an illegal mobile suit dueling sport. Her chance encounter with a war refugee named Nyaan leads her to the cockpit of the mysterious mobile suit, the GQuuuuuuX. Taking on her childhood nickname Machu, she becomes the pilot for a clan called the Pomeranians. Her primary goal becomes earning enough money from these battles to rent a shuttle and travel to Earth with her teammate, Shūji Itō, a boy who pilots the legendary Red Gundam. She is also drawn to a strange, sparkling sensation she experiences during combat, which she calls Kira-Kira, and which she discovers is a form of Newtype connection.
Machu's role in the story is that of a central protagonist whose personal quest for freedom inadvertently entangles her in larger conflicts. She is not a soldier but an ordinary teenager who seizes an extraordinary machine to break free from her mundane life. Her key relationships are crucial to her development. Her bond with Nyaan, a poor refugee who becomes her close friend, forces her to confront her own privilege. Her partnership and growing emotional attachment to the mysterious Shūji become a core motivation, though her possessiveness of their unique Newtype connection leads to moments of jealousy and vulnerability. Her strained relationship with her mother serves as a constant reminder of the conventional life she is trying to escape.
Through her harrowing experiences in Clan Battle, Machu undergoes significant development. Initially driven by a somewhat selfish and naive desire for excitement and freedom, she is forced to confront the real-life consequences of her actions, including the death of an opponent. Her early impulsiveness and failure to appreciate the stability of her home life give way to a deeper sense of empathy. She learns to understand the perspectives and struggles of others, transforming her raw Newtype abilities from a tool for sensory bursts into a genuine means for emotional connection and understanding. She grows from a girl who felt disconnected from her world into someone who can truly connect with the people around her.
Machu possesses notable abilities, both physical and psychic. She is a remarkably strong and natural Newtype, capable of activating and intuitively piloting the GQuuuuuuX's advanced Omega Psycommu system despite having no prior mobile suit experience. This allows her to dodge attacks and achieve multiple kills in her first battle. Physically, she is extremely agile and athletic, able to perform feats like jumping from a mobile suit's hand to its cockpit and doing handstands to feel a sense of true gravity. Her piloting skills are further refined after receiving training from Challia Bull, allowing her to control the GQuuuuuuX without solely relying on the Psycommu system.
