TV-Series
Description
Aoi Kusakabe is the younger sister of Renji Kusakabe and a classmate of the series' other main character, Lily Baker. At the age of thirteen, she is a middle school student who brings a bright and cheerful energy to her interactions with others. Her personality is notably outgoing, friendly, and empathetic, which makes her approachable and allows her to connect with people easily. This trait is particularly important early in the story when she notices that the newly arrived Lily is struggling with the Japanese language and feeling isolated from her peers; Aoi is the one who takes the initiative to reach out, breaking the ice and becoming Lily's first real friend in their class.

Aoi's background reveals a childhood that was significantly more difficult than her present demeanor might suggest. For a long time, she suffered from poor health and was often confined to her room. To combat the loneliness and boredom of being bedridden, she would borrow video games from friends, finding joy in playing and sharing them. This early exposure to gaming, though born from necessity, would later have a major influence on her brother Renji, as her desire for entertainment sparked his own passion for games. During these same periods of illness, Aoi also began to explore fashion design, sketching and creating clothes for herself as another creative escape.

In terms of her role in the story, Aoi serves as a bridge between several key characters. As Lily’s classmate, she helps the British girl navigate the social and linguistic landscape of a Japanese school. Her friendship with Lily is also the catalyst for her own growing interest in video games, an area she was not particularly invested in before. As she spends more time with Lily at the game centre, she begins learning to play various games, often seeking advice from her skilled older brother, Renji. This new hobby deepens her bond with both Lily and her brother, placing her at the heart of their shared world. Aoi is also perceptive about the people around her, and she playfully misinterprets situations, such as when she humorously analyses who Lily's potential crush might be, unaware at first that it is her own brother. In one instance, she fails to recognise Renji when he is in disguise, only discovering his true identity later.

Aoi’s personal development throughout the narrative focuses on her search for her own identity and future. While her friends like Lily begin to consider their paths, Aoi feels a sense of uncertainty and anxiety, feeling left behind as she questions her own aspirations. This period of doubt leads her to reflect on her past and the activities that have consistently brought her joy. She ultimately realises that her enduring love for fashion design, a passion she first discovered during her sickly childhood, is her true calling. With this realisation, she makes the determined decision to pursue a career as a fashion designer, turning a childhood dream into a concrete goal. Beyond her social grace and growing gaming proficiency, her most notable ability is her talent for fashion design, which is recognised by her peers and leads to her appearing as a reader model in school magazines for her unique and creative style.
