Description
Kento Nanami is a Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer and a graduate of Tokyo Jujutsu High. He stands approximately 184 centimeters tall and was born on July 3. His journey into the world of sorcery began during his first year at the school, where his only classmate was Yu Haibara. During this time, the pair were mentored by second-year students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, accompanying them on a mission to escort the Star Plasma Vessel, an assignment that was far beyond their expected skill level. A year later, Nanami and Haibara were given what was supposed to be a simple mission to subdue a curse, but it turned out to be a dangerous encounter with a special-grade cursed spirit. In this mission, Haibara was killed. The senseless death of his friend profoundly disillusioned Nanami, leading him to graduate with the bitter conviction that the work of a jujutsu sorcerer was fundamentally unfulfilling and unfair.
After leaving the world of sorcery, Nanami became a salaryman, working at a financial company. He found this life similarly empty and meaningless, feeling unappreciated and as though his work had no real impact on anyone. The turning point came when he happened to exorcise a low-grade curse from the shoulder of a woman who worked at a bakery. Seeing her tears of genuine gratitude, he rediscovered a sense of purpose. He concluded that if both the life of a sorcerer and a corporate employee were ultimately disappointing, he would choose the path that suited his natural aptitude. This led him to contact his senior, Satoru Gojo, and return to work as a jujutsu sorcerer.
Nanami possesses a calm, analytical, and reserved personality, presenting a stark contrast to the more flamboyant Gojo. He is exceptionally pragmatic and efficient, treating his dangerous work as a professional would, with a strong distaste for unnecessary overtime. In fact, he famously imposes a binding vow on himself that limits his cursed energy output to eighty to ninety percent during regular work hours, removing this restriction after six in the evening to unleash his full power. Despite his stoic and often irritable exterior, he has a strong moral compass and a deep-seated sense of responsibility. This is most evident in his role as a mentor to Yuji Itadori, whom he treats as a child, believing that adults should not burden young people with the darkest realities of the sorcerer world. He guides Itadori with practical advice and hard-earned wisdom rather than with grand ideals.
His primary motivation is not to save the world for a noble cause but to do work that has tangible, positive results for others. He seeks a sense of worth in his actions, having experienced the hollowness of both a sorcerer's thankless duty and a corporate job with no personal reward. In the story, Nanami serves as a crucial mentor and ally. He takes on the responsibility of looking after Itadori at Gojo's request, training him in the field and providing a stable, common-sense foundation. His role is that of the reliable, hardworking professional who anchors the more chaotic elements of the narrative.
Key relationships define his character. His bond with Satoru Gojo is one of mutual trust but not necessarily respect; Nanami finds Gojo’s personality difficult to tolerate but has absolute faith in his strength and reliability. His most significant relationship is with Yuji Itadori. Itadori's nickname for him, "Nanamin," reflects a deep fondness and respect. Over time, Nanami moves from seeing Itadori as simply a child to be protected to recognizing him as a true sorcerer. Another important junior is Takuma Ino, who holds Nanami in such high esteem that receiving his recommendation for a promotion is a paramount honor.
Nanami undergoes significant development, his arc marked by a return to a profession he once despised, finding purpose in it through the people he protects and mentors. The tragedy of his past, particularly the death of Haibara, lingers, informing his serious and protective nature. His development culminates in the Shibuya Incident, where after fighting continuously against overwhelming forces and suffering grievous injuries, he finally falls to Mahito. His last words to Yuji are a final act of mentorship and faith: "You've got it from here."
Notable abilities include his innate technique, the Ratio Technique, which divides the length of any target into ten parts and creates an imposed weak point at the seven-to-three ratio, allowing for devastatingly precise and powerful strikes regardless of the target's actual durability. He is a formidable close-quarters combatant, able to hold his own against special-grade curses. He is also exceptionally skilled in performing the Black Flash, a distortion in space that occurs when cursed energy is applied within a fraction of a second of a physical hit, drastically amplifying the attack's power. He holds the record for consecutive Black Flashes, having achieved four in a row. Despite his power, his main weakness is a lack of a countermeasure for domain expansions, an area of jujutsu he was unable to master. He also uses a blunt, cleaver-like weapon wrapped in cursed tool fabric as his primary tool for channeling his technique.
