Description
Kanata Hjuger is the central protagonist of the anime "Tales of Crestoria: The Wake of Sin". He is a fifteen-year-old boy from the small village of Dalchia, where he lives as the only son of Cody Hjuger, a respected village leader and the manager of a local orphanage. He is trained in swordsmanship by Cress Albane, a skilled fighter whose techniques Kanata initially mimics.

At the outset, Kanata is depicted as pure-hearted, cheerful, and driven by a strong sense of justice, with a deep desire to protect the weak. His innocence often manifests as bluntness and straightforwardness, which can come across as rude, and he has a natural tendency to speak from a position of moral superiority without realizing it. He holds a deep fascination with the world's system of justice, which is governed by Vision Orbs that broadcast people's deeds for public judgment, and he initially believes this system to be righteous.

This worldview is shattered when he discovers the horrifying truth about his father. The seemingly benevolent orphanage run by Cody Hjuger is revealed to be a front for a human trafficking organization that sells children into slavery. When Kanata learns that his father intends to sell his dear friend, an orphan girl named Misella, he confronts him. In a moment of rage and betrayal, Kanata grabs a knife and kills his own father to protect her. This act brands him with the Stain of Guilt on his right hand, marking him as a criminal, a Transgressor, in the eyes of the world and forcing him to flee his home alongside Misella.

After his escape, Kanata struggles with the weight of his sin, initially making excuses for his actions and grappling with suicidal thoughts. He is later saved from Enforcers by a mysterious gun-slinging man named Vicious, who pushes Kanata to confront his crime directly. Vicious forces him to choose between letting his sin consume him or owning it. Kanata ultimately declares that he does not regret his actions, as they were necessary to save Misella. This acceptance awakens his Blood Sin, granting him a powerful new two-handed greatsword known as Patricidal Edge.

Throughout the story, Kanata serves as the emotional core of the group, motivated by a promise to find a way to erase his and Misella's condemnation. His journey is one of moral maturation. He initially clings to the idea that his father deserved death, but through meeting others, he comes to understand that his crime is not purely black and white and that he may never be forgiven. A major turning point occurs after a massacre, which fully turns him against the Vision Orb system, solidifying his determination to destroy it and change the world for the better.

Kanata's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Misella is profound; she is the person he sacrificed everything to protect, and their mutual promise drives him forward. His mentor, Cress Albane, represents the past and the ideals of justice he once held, making their inevitable confrontation painful. Most significantly, his dynamic with the cynical and violent Vicious is transformative. Vicious acts as a harsh mentor who forces Kanata to accept his own agency and desire to live, and it is through Vicious that Kanata unlocks his true power.

In combat, Kanata initially relies on a one-handed sword and basic artes like Demon Fang, the technique he learned from Cress. However, after awakening his Blood Sin, his fighting style changes dramatically. He wields the greatsword Patricidal Edge, which allows him to perform powerful mid-range attacks. When he fully discards his despair and embraces his sin, his right arm becomes coated in demonic armor that fuses with his weapon, dramatically increasing his strength and granting him even more potent artes.
