Description
Ayumi Amano is the younger brother of Komako Amano, who serves as the editor for the protagonist, Hotaru Yuyami. His professional life is that of a manga artist, a career that has a significant influence on his lifestyle and personality. Ayumi is rarely present in Japan, as he spends much of his time traveling the world to gather inspiration for his work.

In terms of personality, Ayumi is depicted as a very relaxed and open-minded individual. This easygoing nature allows him to be curious and accepting of unusual situations. During a brief return to his old neighborhood, he stumbles upon Kinokoinu, the mushroom-like creature living with Hotaru. Upon seeing the creature become frightened, Ayumi does not react with alarm but rather assumes he personally scared the small being. His instinct is not to flee or report what he saw but to try and make amends. He returns with a hat decorated with a snail design, believing it might be a friendly and comforting gesture.

This action reveals a key detail about Ayumi's professional work: he draws snails for a living, making snail-themed merchandise a natural part of his world. Unfortunately, his well-intentioned gift has the opposite effect, as Kinokoinu is deeply terrified of snails. Despite this comedic misunderstanding, Ayumi's role in the story is a positive and affirming one. He represents the idea of an accepting and open-minded world, a concept that encourages Hotaru to become less protective and secretive about Kinokoinu's existence.

His key relationship is with his sister, Komako, though his significant impact is on Hotaru and Kinokoinu. He serves as a catalyst for Kinokoinu's social development. The mushroom pup, initially scared of being seen by a stranger, later reflects on the encounter with Ayumi and comes to a profound realization. Kinokoinu understands that not all strangers are dangerous and that some can be friendly, becoming excited at the prospect of making a new friend in Ayumi. Ayumi's brief appearance thus helps reinforce the story's theme of emotional recovery and the expansion of one's social world beyond grief and isolation. A notable ability tied to his character is his skill as a mangaka who specializes in drawing snails, a talent that directly leads to his comedic and developmental impact on the plot.
