Description
Akaza holds the position of Upper Moon Three, also known as Upper Rank Three, among the Twelve Kizuki, the most powerful demons serving under Muzan Kibutsuji. He is known as the demon who favors martial arts, relying on hand-to-hand combat rather than a weapon. His appearance is marked by pale skin, bright pinkish-red hair, and a body covered in a pattern of dark blue lines that resemble a tattoo. His eyes have yellow irises and black sclera, which give him a constant, intense stare.

Before becoming a demon, Akaza was a human named Hakuji. His early life was filled with tragedy. Born into poverty in Edo, he resorted to theft to afford medicine for his sickly father. Despite enduring severe punishments, including being branded with criminal tattoos, his father eventually committed suicide to free his son from a life of crime. After being banished, the teenage Hakuji was a violent drifter until he met Keizo, the master of a Soryu martial arts dojo. Keizo took the boy in, and Hakuji found purpose in training and in caring for Keizo's ill daughter, Koyuki. He fell in love with Koyuki and was promised her hand in marriage and inheritance of the dojo. However, a rival dojo poisoned the well, killing both Keizo and Koyuki. Enraged by the loss of his new family, Hakuji brutally killed all sixty-seven members of the rival dojo with his bare hands. It was at this moment of utter despair that Muzan Kibutsuji found him and transformed him into a demon.

As a demon, Akaza lost most of his conscious memories of his human life, but his core personality traits remained. He is a warrior who values strength above all else and holds a deep contempt for the weak. He is constantly searching for powerful opponents to test and improve his abilities, showing respect only to those who possess formidable fighting spirit. Despite his ruthless nature in battle against men, he possesses a unique and unwavering code: he refuses to kill or eat women. This rule, which Muzan himself has allowed him to keep, is a subconscious remnant of his love for Koyuki, a memory he no longer consciously recalls but that still dictates his actions.

Akaza is driven by an insatiable desire to become stronger. For him, strength is the only truth, and he views weakness as a sin. He seeks to break the spirit of strong fighters, often offering them the chance to become demons so they can continue to grow and challenge him forever. He despises his fellow Upper Moon, Doma (Upper Moon Two), not only because Doma outranks him despite being turned into a demon later, but also because of Doma's sadistic personality and his casual cruelty towards women, which directly violates Akaza's personal moral code. This rivalry is filled with open hostility.

In the story, Akaza serves as a major antagonist and a monumental threat to the Demon Slayer Corps. He is first introduced during the Mugen Train Arc, where he engages the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, in a devastating battle. Although Akaza retreats when the sun rises, the fight results in Rengoku's death, leaving a lasting emotional scar on the protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado. Later, during the final battle in the Infinity Castle, Akaza becomes a primary obstacle for Tanjiro and the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka. This confrontation serves as the climax of his character arc, where the relentless battle causes his suppressed human memories of Keizo and Koyuki to resurface, challenging his identity as a demon.

Throughout the series, Akaza demonstrates a significant capacity for development, though it is a tragic one. He is not a static villain but a character whose past explains his present obsession. His final battle forces him to confront the humanity he lost. As he remembers his promise to Koyuki to protect people, he rejects his demonic nature. In a moment of ultimate defiance against Muzan, Akaza chooses to end his own life by allowing his neck to be destroyed, finally rejoining his loved ones in death.

Akaza is an exceptionally formidable fighter whose abilities make him nearly unstoppable. His primary combat style is an enhanced version of the Soryu martial arts he learned as a human, which he channels through his Blood Demon Art known as Destructive Death. His signature technique is the Compass Needle, which creates a snowflake-like pattern under his feet that allows him to sense an opponent's fighting spirit, battle intent, and even their vital points, enabling him to predict and counter attacks with superhuman speed and accuracy. He can fire shockwaves from his fists, unleash rapid and powerful kick combinations, and perform techniques like Annihilation Type to close distances instantly. His demonic regeneration is incredibly potent, allowing him to reattach limbs and heal severe wounds almost immediately. Uniquely, Akaza has developed the ability to regenerate his head, making him immune to the standard demon-killing method of decapitation by a Nichirin blade, forcing his enemies to push him to a point of self-destruction.
