Description
Beryl Gardinant is the central character of the story, a middle-aged swordsmanship instructor from the remote village of Biden. At forty-five years old, he has spent most of his life running his family’s dojo, content to pass on his skills to the local children. Despite his unassuming appearance and self-deprecating manner, his reputation as the Backwater Swordsman has grown far beyond his rural home, largely because many of his former students have become renowned knights, high-ranking adventurers, and powerful mages throughout the kingdom of Liberion.
Personality-wise, Beryl is defined by a profound and genuine humility that borders on self-deprecation. He genuinely views himself as an ordinary old man with slightly above-average skill, completely unable to reconcile his own self-image with the legendary status his students attribute to him. This leads to frequent moments where strangers underestimate him, only to be astonished when they witness his abilities firsthand. He is inherently kind, gentle, and finds it very difficult to refuse a request for help, a trait that his determined former pupil Allucia exploits to bring him to the capital. However, this calm and easygoing demeanor vanishes when someone he cherishes is threatened or when he witnesses a grave injustice, revealing a fierce and unyielding anger. He is also notably oblivious to the romantic affections of the several accomplished women in his life, dismissing their advances due to his own insecurities and a strong sense of propriety regarding his role as their teacher and their significant age difference.
Beryl’s primary motivation is not personal glory but the simple, humble goal of nurturing the next generation. His greatest pride comes from seeing his students succeed, and his deepest satisfaction is found in teaching. He is initially reluctant to leave his village, and only does so after being presented with a royal decree from his student Allucia and being essentially expelled from his home dojo by his father, who orders him not to return until he finds a wife. Once in the capital, his role becomes that of a special instructor for the elite Liberion Knights and a lecturer at the Mage Academy, a position he feels profoundly unqualified for despite being the most capable person for the job.
In the story, Beryl serves as the experienced protagonist and mentor archetype. He is the calm, steady center around which the plot revolves, and his journey is not one of gaining power, but of coming to terms with the immense power he already possesses. He acts as a father figure and a pillar of support for his former students, who still rely on his wisdom and guidance. Key relationships include his adoring former student Allucia Citrus, the knight commander who is determined to both showcase his talents and win his heart; Surena Lysandra, a black-rank adventurer he rescued as a child and taught to channel her trauma through the sword; and his adopted daughter Mewi Freya, a young pickpocket he takes under his wing, showing his deeply paternal nature. He also shares a close, respectful friendship with Lucy Diamond, the head of the Magic Academy, who is one of the few people able to challenge him on an equal footing.
Beryl’s development throughout the series centers on his growing self-awareness. He begins the story genuinely convinced he is an ordinary swordsman, but through a series of intense battles against powerful knights, monsters, and mages, he slowly begins to grasp the true extent of his abilities. A significant milestone in this journey is finally sparring with his father, a man he has never been able to defeat, which forces him to confront his own deeply ingrained insecurities. His philosophy shifts from merely teaching self-defense to embracing his own status as a master swordsman.
Notable abilities set Beryl apart in a world of magical and superhuman fighters. Rather than relying on brute strength, magical enhancements, or flashy techniques, his power is founded on decades of pure, practical skill and analysis. His most remarkable asset is his eyes: he possesses superhuman kinetic vision and a preternatural ability to analyze an opponent's stance, breathing, footwork, and muscle movements in an instant. This allows him to predict attacks and identify minuscule gaps in an enemy's defense, which he exploits with perfect counter-attacks. He is a master of Awesomeness by Analysis, able to deconstruct techniques he has never seen before in the span of a few exchanges. His fighting style is Boring, but Practical, focusing on flawless footwork, precise range assessment, and a calm, unshakeable demeanor under pressure. He is a combat pragmatist who will use any unconventional or dirty move to secure a win, as his primary goal in a life-or-death fight is to survive, declaring that there is no need to win, but he will never lose. After his standard longsword is melted in a battle with a named griffin, he commissions a new blade from his former student Balder, forged from the monster’s own claws and elven steel, creating a powerful and durable weapon.
