Description
Mordea Gardenant is the mother of the protagonist Beryl Gardenant. She lives in the same rural countryside where she raised him, and despite her advanced age, she retains a remarkably youthful appearance and an extraordinary amount of physical and mental energy. Her personality is boisterous and overbearing; she does not hesitate to boss around her son, even after he has become widely recognized as a master swordsman. Her forceful, energetic demeanor often leaves Beryl feeling more exhausted and older than he actually is.
Her primary motivation is a deep, motherly desire to see her son settled and happy. She has not given up on the idea of having grandchildren, and she frequently pressures Beryl about his lack of a love life. In her eyes, Beryl still has much to accomplish beyond swordsmanship alone. She also represents the foundation of Beryl's humble nature and his tendency to underestimate his own achievements.
In the story, Mordea serves as a grounding influence from Beryl’s past. While her role is largely offstage in the capital-focused events, her presence in the countryside is a frequent reminder of where he came from and the values he holds. Her relationship with Beryl is one of loving but forceful maternal authority. She is unabashedly proud of him yet never lets him become complacent.
Notably, Mordea was once a formidable swordsman herself. To Beryl, she was always the strongest swordsman he ever knew—an insurmountable wall he could never climb over, even as he surpassed nearly everyone else. Her skills as a blade wielder were legendary in his eyes, and that early experience of being unable to defeat her shaped his lifelong dedication to swordsmanship. She remains a symbol of the early, humble dojo where Beryl’s journey began.
