Description
Masahide Tokuda, commonly known by the nickname Toku, is a supporting character in Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon. He is an employee at the professional kaiju cleaning company Monster Sweeper Inc., a job that involves disposing of kaiju remains after battles with the Defense Force. He is a tall man with black, afro-styled curly hair, a mild mustache, a goatee, and a missing tooth, and he is known for his animated facial expressions and large eyes. During work, he wears the standard coveralls of the company.
Tokuda has a loud yet gentle personality. He is straightforward and often speaks the truth even when it may hurt others, and he becomes easily irritated when his colleagues lose confidence in difficult situations. He places great trust in the Defense Force and firmly believes in their ability to protect the country. Despite his outwardly brash demeanor, he demonstrates a deeply selfless and caring side, especially when helping bystanders during kaiju attacks and when protecting his daughter, Chieko Tokuda. He has personal habits that include heavy drinking and gambling, though he is disciplined enough never to borrow more than a set amount from his colleague Ichitaka Mitsuike. According to his subordinates, he can appear remarkably composed in tense situations.
Tokuda's motivations are rooted in a sense of responsibility and duty. He takes pride in his work as a kaiju cleaner and sees it as a vital part of the overall effort against kaiju. His primary motivation, however, is the safety and well-being of his daughter, Chieko. He is willing to sacrifice his own life to protect her, as shown when a kaiju attacks her wedding venue and he attempts to distract it despite the danger. Beyond his personal life, he is driven by a strong sense of solidarity with the Defense Force, particularly with Kafka Hibino, whom he mentored and continues to support from the sidelines.
In the story, Tokuda serves as a grounded, everyman figure who represents the civilian workers who support the Defense Force's efforts. He introduces Reno Ichikawa to Kafka Hibino when Reno joins Monster Sweeper as a part-timer, acting as a bridge between the main protagonists and the cleaning crew. He observes major battles from a distance and provides commentary on the situation, often boosting the morale of his own team by expressing unwavering faith in the Defense Force's victory. His role is not that of a frontline fighter but of a loyal and experienced support staff member who has seen the aftermath of countless kaiju encounters.
Tokuda's key relationships include his daughter Chieko, whom he loves deeply and would do anything to protect. At Monster Sweeper, he works closely with his colleague Ichitaka Mitsuike, from whom he occasionally borrows money for his gambling habit. He has a mentor-like relationship with both Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa, having worked with them before they joined the Defense Force. He treats them with respect and continues to believe in Kafka's abilities even after Kafka's identity as Kaiju No. 8 is revealed. He also interacts with members of the Third Division, such as Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina and operator Konomi Okonogi, when they come to his workplace to investigate a suspicious new employee.
Tokuda's development is subtle but meaningful. He starts as a seasoned but somewhat cynical veteran of Monster Sweeper who has accepted that his prime years are behind him. Over time, he rekindles his sense of purpose through his interactions with Kafka and Reno and by witnessing the progress of the Defense Force. His trust in Kafka is particularly significant, as he never wavers in his belief that Kafka will ultimately defeat Kaiju No. 9, even when others around him lose hope. One of his most defining moments comes at his daughter's wedding, where he attempts to sacrifice himself to save her, demonstrating that his personal growth culminates in an act of pure selflessness.
Tokuda does not possess any supernatural or combat abilities, as he is a civilian worker rather than a Defense Force officer. His notable skills are practical ones gained from years of experience in kaiju disposal. He is highly knowledgeable about kaiju anatomy and the proper methods for dismantling and disposing of their remains. He is also physically capable, as the work requires strength and endurance, and he has developed a calm and methodical approach to handling dangerous post-battle environments. His greatest abilities are his strong will, his ability to inspire and steady his crew during chaotic situations, and his unwavering moral compass, all of which make him a dependable figure in the background of the action.
