Description
Aoi Kaguragi is a character from the anime Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon. He is a young man with a tall and muscular build, standing 183 centimeters tall, and is recognized by his tanned skin, spiky blonde hair which is depicted as white in the manga, and striking red eyes. A particularly distinctive feature is his notable lack of eyebrows. On duty, he typically wears the standard Defense Force combat suit and a respirator mask during operations.
Before joining the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, Aoi was a rising star in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, where he had a promising career ahead of him. He chose to abandon that established path to enlist in the Defense Force, prioritizing frontline protection against kaiju, though he rarely discusses his specific motivations for this decision. His entrance into the Defense Force was marked by exceptional performance; he ranked first in the fitness test out of all candidates and achieved an unleashed combat power output of 15 percent during the aptitude examination.
Aoi has a serious, stoic, and calm demeanor that often masks deeper emotions. He is driven by a powerful commitment to self-improvement, constantly striving to surpass his peers and become stronger. Despite his sometimes cold exterior, he demonstrates a quiet but genuine care for his comrades, once expressing during a team gathering that it was a good night and that he did not want anyone to be missing.
His primary rival is Haruichi Izumo, another highly capable trainee whose talent and determination match his own. This competitive relationship is a strong motivator for Aoi, and it gradually evolves into a relationship of mutual respect and effective cooperation on the battlefield. He also keeps a focused interest on fellow examinee Kikoru Shinomiya, whose skills and family legacy he respects.
Aoi was initially assigned to the Third Division. During early missions, such as the Sagamihara Neutralization Operation, he increased his combat power output to 25 percent, informing Haruichi of this advancement. He fought in the Tachikawa Base raid under the command of Kafka Hibino, alongside Haruichi and Ryo Ikaruga, and was present to witness Kafka's transformation into Kaiju No. 8. Following Kafka's capture and the destruction of the Tachikawa Base, Aoi transferred to the Second Division with Haruichi. He later acquired a specialized weapon known as the PB-3115 pile driver, a large hydraulic hammer manufactured by Izumo Tech suited to his immense strength. He eventually returned to the Third Division with Haruichi Izumo, participating in the Third Wave response team during the cataclysms in the Kasumigaseki Area. When Kafka was arrested, Aoi demonstrated his loyalty by using his personal connections within the Defense Force's higher command to try to ensure that Kafka was not executed.
Aoi's combat abilities emphasize his exceptional physical strength, endurance, and tactical proficiency. He is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant and was praised by Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina for his skill in kendo. His arsenal includes standard Defense Force rifles and later the PB-3115 pile driver. His unleashed combat power progressed from 15 percent during the entrance exams to 25 percent in early field operations. Outside of duty, Aoi enjoys playing sports, particularly basketball, reading historical novels, and has an affinity for hamsters.
