Movie
Description
Iharu Furuhashi is a young officer in the Defense Force's Third Division, later reassigned to the Fourth Division following the destruction of the Tachikawa Base. He is a spirited and ambitious young man of 19 years old, with a birthday on July 23rd, who stands 177 centimeters tall.
Iharu has a distinctive and memorable appearance, characterized by his spiky, brightly colored hair styled in a classic pompadour and his notably sharp, shark-like teeth. Before enlisting in the Defense Force, Iharu was the top graduate of the Hachioji Monster Subjugation Academy and was used to being the best in nearly everything he did. His drive to join the Defense Force originated in his middle school years when he was saved from a kaiju attack by Mina Ashiro, an event that inspired him to follow in her footsteps. His strong performance in the entry exams, where he placed third in physical tests and achieved a suit release rate of 14%, marked him as one of the most promising new recruits of his class.
In terms of personality, Iharu is passionate, hot-blooded, and takes great pride in his abilities. He is an honest and open individual who often acts as the mood-maker of his team, bringing energy and positivity to those around him. Despite his tough and sometimes brash exterior, he is never malicious and cares deeply about his friends and comrades. However, this confident front hides a significant internal struggle. Upon joining the Defense Force, he quickly hit a wall, encountering many peers who were more outstanding than him, which gave rise to a deep-seated inferiority complex. This feeling is particularly pronounced in relation to his friend and rival, Reno Ichikawa, whose rapid growth and selection as a candidate for a powerful Numbers weapon exacerbate Iharu's sense of inadequacy and self-doubt.
Iharu’s motivations are driven by a desire to prove his strength and overcome these feelings of inferiority. His ultimate goal is to become strong enough to stand alongside his heroes, such as Captain Mina Ashiro, and to be a reliable comrade who can protect others rather than being left behind. In the story, he serves as a key supporting character and a crucial teammate. During a mission, he and Reno were attacked by Kaiju No. 9. Although he was forced to flee, Iharu overcame his fear and sense of guilt to return and attempt a rescue, demonstrating his core loyalty. He later fights alongside Kafka Hibino, the titular Kaiju No. 8, and others during the raid on Tachikawa Base.
One of Iharu’s most significant relationships is with Reno Ichikawa. They joined the Defense Force at the same time and share a complex bond of close friendship and fierce rivalry, constantly pushing each other to improve. He is also deeply admired by his fellow promising recruits, Haruichi Izumo and Aoi Kaguragi. His admiration for Mina Ashiro remains a core part of his character. A pivotal relationship develops with Captain Jugo Ogata of the Fourth Division, who recognizes Iharu's unique talent and becomes his mentor.
Iharu undergoes significant development, shifting from a proud but insecure rookie to a more self-aware and reliable soldier. A turning point is his classification as a flash adapter, also known as an instantaneous adapter. This means his suit's release rate is typically low and unstable, but during moments of intense emotion in battle, his combat power can explosively increase to several times its normal level. Captain Ogata, who shares this same rare trait, trains Iharu to better control these power spikes, helping him to intentionally enter a state of heightened ability. This allows his combat power to spike from a base of 24% to levels that can surpass Reno's standard output in short bursts.
Iharu’s notable abilities are centered on this flash adapter power, which makes him an unpredictable and devastating force in short engagements. To complement his fighting style, he is equipped with a special close-range shotgun, designated the SG-1108. This weapon fires electrified shells that can penetrate a kaiju's hide and release internal electrical shocks, causing significant damage.
