He Liao Diao, known as Ka Ryo Ten, hails from the Kyuumei Tribe, a mountain people eradicated in conflict with Yo Tan Wa's forces. Orphaned at five after her grandfather's death, she survived in Kokuhi Village by working as a lookout for thugs. To avoid exploitation, she concealed her gender behind a straw poncho and owl mask. Her path crossed Li Xin (Shin) and Ying Zheng (Ei Sei) during their flight from Sei Kyou's rebellion. Lured by promised rewards, she guided them through underground passages and ultimately joined their cause.
Following the Qin throne's stabilization, a period of peace left her seeking purpose. She found it by dedicating herself to Shin's ambition of becoming the "Greatest General Under the Heavens." Acknowledging her physical limitations for combat, she trained as a strategist under Shou Hei Kun, Kai Oku, and Mou Ki at Qin's Strategist Academy. Her tactical talent proved exceptional, matching top student Mou Ki in simulations and earning formal recognition alongside Mou Ten. She rose to become the Hi Shin Unit's chief strategist during its tenure as a 1,000-man unit, revolutionizing its mobility and battlefield effectiveness.
Her appearance transformed significantly over time. Initially mistaken for a boy due to short hair and tomboyish clothes, she matured into a feminine woman with shoulder-length brown hair, blue eyes, and a pale-brown complexion. Consistent features include two protruding hair strands and her Kyuumei owl mask. Her attire evolved from a child's zigzag-collared tunic with chainmail to a commander's cape denoting her rank.
As a tactician, she excels in reorganizing battlefields, exploiting terrain, and crafting multi-layered strategies. Key innovations include the "Hi Shin Unit-Style River Bridge" at Kokuyou Hills, turning an "uncrossable" river into a tactical advantage against Zhao forces. She adeptly adapts formations like the Wedge, Hourai, and Drill for specific scenarios, frequently coordinating with allied units. Her leadership extends beyond planning; she actively rallies troops mid-battle, demonstrated during the defense of Kankoku Pass and the breakout from Ri Boku's encirclement at Gian.
Despite minimal martial skill, she possesses remarkable endurance, surviving stab wounds, beatings, and arrow injuries. For defense, she employs a blowgun with numbing darts inherited from the assassin Muta. She also meticulously manages the Hi Shin Unit's logistics, including supplies, equipment, and rations.
Her relationships define her motivations. She views Shin as an adoptive older brother, channeling her strategies wholly towards his dream. She maintains close bonds with Kyou Kai, Ei Sei, and Mou Ki, with interactions across the Hi Shin Unit emphasizing deep mutual loyalty. While romantic feelings for Shin are implied, they remain unreciprocated.
